I gave up diet pop cold turkey (along with a lifestyle change with no fast food, decreased carbs/increased proteins and 1.5 hours of exercise a day) in January of 2011 when I weighed 235; I now weigh 160. I substituted 64 ounces of green tea that I brew at home and it did help me tremendously with a decreased appetite.

There are different studies on diet pop leading to increased appetite or depression. Remember that the additives (sweetener, acids, etc.) in the pop affect people differently. Bottom line, you can only figure out if it is better for you by trying.

manufactures are pretty sneaky when it comes to ingredients...you are just better off not drinking pop. even if its diet.

So, diet pop doesn't have HFCS in it then? Are you admitting to that?

Also, if that is the case, why just soda? You better give up everything that you do not grow yourself because lawdy knows what you will find in any foods then.

False. It OK to drink it. I recommend op that you do your own research and I'm talking about scientific studies and journals.

    WOW mamajama!!
I have been one of the worst Diet Pepsi drinkers ever. They probably owe me some stock for it:laugh:
Scary fact I heard that coke can clean your toilet so i guess it could eat your insides also, ugh its just what I heard never researched it.
I have been a lot better (not perfect) at my addiction. What i have done is increase my water intake. Only allow myself a can if I drink two glasses of water first.
If I really just need the carbonation I buy carbonated water.
Today is the first day in a long time I have had non. I know the bug for soda.
Feel free to add me we can keep each other accountable, I am new here also.

nope...if you knew how they can get around it you would never want to touch it. if you must have pop..wild oats natural soda is a better option.

Huh? - this does not even relate to my point. Why is only soda the issue if your conspiracy theory is correct. Do you have anything to support these allegations?

How do you know they do not sneak HFCS in your natural soda then?

I was drinking about 6 liters a day of diet soda. I gradually cut back and now I drink about a 2 liter a day give or take a glass. I have noticed that my weight loss has been more consistent since I reduced the soda.

That's lovely for you. Now, how about providing some of those studies. It's what the actually OP asked about.

ETA: what is wrong with MSG?
  • I have a can almost every day - I lost 60 lbs while doing just that and kept it off for 5 years...I am still not mummified, embalmed and have not grown a second head.....Go have the other half of the can!

LOL! Make sure you post pics if that ever happens LOL

I am really, really trying to give up diet pop but finding it very hard. Any suggestions for scary health stats to frighten me off of it for good? Feel free to add me as a friend, I am fairly new and looking forward to motivation and support from others trying to get healthy for life.

Here is a scary stat..... I have been drinking atleast 2 to 3 24 oz. Diet Pepsi a day for the last 42 months and have lost 311 lbs.!!!! Ahhh!!!! Scared yet??? LOLZ.... but serious I don't buy all the hype there is more aspartame in a 4 oz. chicken breast than there is in diet pop (a whole lot more!!) but to each there own cause this guy will not be giving it up anytime soon and if someone does say it will kill me well I will just say I will take my chances cause 42 months ago at 560 lbs. had I not quick cramming food into my pie whole chances are I would have already been dead by now.... food for thought..... Best of Luck......

I also love diet pop. One a day probably won't do to much damage but I see it as a weakness so for that reason I fight the urge and try to only have two or three a week.

I drink water spiked with lemon juice all day--that is when I am not drinking green tea spiked with mint or lemon juice. I also drink a few cups of coffee (one regular in the a.m. and then I switch to decaf). You need to have alternatives that you don't mind drinking instead of the diet pop. By the way, did you know that you have the same insulin spike from drinking diet pop as you do from drinking regular soda pop? Diet pop makes you fat for that reason. It causes one to lose control of one's appetite almost as much as sugar does.

As a lifestyle change, I have been very good about modifying certain aspects of my caloric intake by learning portion control and other things. As a lifestyle change, I have cut back on a lot of sweets and only have them every so often instead of after every meal. As a lifestyle change, I want to eat as I think I will be able to maintain for the rest of my life. That being said, I love my Dt Dew and there is no way I am giving it up. I drink a 44oz cup of it every day with lunch into the afternoon then switch to water for the rest of the day. Do I know its not pure goodness for me? Yep, I sure do, but I am not willing to give up everything I enjoy. That is my only source of caffeine too :) I'm down 30lbs from the start of my journey and the only hiccup occurs when I drink a bunch of beer in an evening, not the diet soda.

No there's nothing scary about it and no reason to stop doing it if you enjoy it. I love caffeine. I gave it up for several months a few years ago and totally hated the way I felt without it. Not just for the first few days or weeks, but for months on end until I finally started again.

And wow @ the amount of superstition and urban legend being thrown around in this thread, and backed up by more superstition, paranoia, and mystery studies.

The Prevention magazine link is an article, not a study.

The MSG one at least quotes sources. I am on my phone so need to check them out better from a computer but from a quick scan. the only thing the write up shows causation for, from my quick read, is if you have asthma already it may trigger an asthma attack or a headache if you have a sensitivity to it.

You have actually yet to show that my health will be messed up.

    Club soda/fizzy water

When I was quitting I drank this and it helped a lot! I half think I was addicted more to the carbonation
  • What helped me was switching to unsweetened iced tea - fruity flavors are the best. Also try to replace it with crystal light. It is really not that bad for you, but it can increase stomach upset (which also increases when you lose weight).

I had to get off it completely as it literally was eating at my stomach wall. I was hooked.
Doubt that. The hydrochloric acid in your stomach is much much stronger than phosphoric acid.

its from a cookbook written by a nutritionist and a cook. here is the link to their site http://janetandgreta.com/
A cookbook isn't science though. It's subjective opinion. Just like what this person thinks is the the right combinations of ingredients for something to taste just right.

Hahahaha! So Asians in Asia, who happen NOT to have the health issues of overweight Americans, should be dying from it since MSG is in just about EVERY MEAL. No lie.

Pah, quote didn't transfer so nevermind that post.
I have seen studies that show Aspartame to increase desire for simple carbohydrates. Will look again, but I no longer have access to EbscoHost and the like :/
