Evening Munchies

I really fight with my evening snacking. Although I do a pretty good job of keeping the evening snacking to mildly healthy options (nuts, popcorn, etc), I'd like to stop the night time snacking all together. Any suggestions??

Maybe try brushing your teeth as soon as you're done eating. Another idea is to plan for one evening snack (maybe an apple at a certain time) so that you don't feel totally deprived.0

Why do you want to stop the snacking if you're eating "healthy" snacks?0

Try eating more during the day so you're not hungry at night? I notice that the days when I'm not overly hungry and have a significant calorie deficit, around 7-8pm I am starving and want to graze…
Having said that, I do usually have a snack in the evening after dinner, usually a fat-free yogurt, sometimes with semi-sweet chocolate chips or granola added.
Good luck!0 -
I drink a lot of chamomile tea (personally no honey) it's 0cals and soothing no caffeine or go to bed early ? my munchies usually start at 2am (but I have dinner around 6-7)
also you might be bored so workout, easy stuff like squats, crunches, lunges ...distract yourself and if your still hungry in an hour (that's my testing period) then have something real light0 -
There isn't anything wrong with evening munchies, really - just snack on something that isn't total processed crap. Right now, I have about a 1/4 cup of raw almonds and lots of water, and a little cup of yogurt. Some celery sticks or apple slices with peanut butter are really tasty, too. Or make yourself a little veggie tray. Even popcorn can be good if it isn't that buttery stuff that you stick in the microwave - you can air pop it or pop them in the microwave inside a brown paper bag. I just like to add sea salt.0

I don't know if this helps but I like to make myself a cup of herbal or flavored tea and don't add any sugar or sweeteners and sip on that through the evening. I may have 1 or 2 cups in the evening and doing things in the evening that would be hard to do while eating. I also like to munch on ice. I know ice isn't good for your teeth but that helps me as well when I feel the munchies coming on. I like to color in coloring books or do scrapbooking in the evenings after my workouts and those tend to keep me busy where I'm not thinking about food. I don't know if these will help at all but I just thought I'd throw them out there in case. I have in the past when I thought about snacking I would do something for myself like pamper myself with a bubble bath, painting my nails, etc. Good luck!!!!0

You could try eating less in the day to make more room for healthy snack calories in the evenings0

What is your motivation for stopping night time snacking? Seems so arbitrary.0

Try drinking mint tea. For some reason, the mint taste makes me not want to eat anything because it does not mix well. Mentos chews also work well for me. Try it out.0

I have had an ongoing battle with nighttime munchies. I've found that drinking a cup of hot tea helps or chewing gum. There are times that I just have to remove myself from the vicinity of food and just go upstairs and read or work for the night.0

I save a good 75% of my calories for after work and can eat and eat and eat in the evenings and stay in my calories! I don't think about food at work, so I don't need many calories then, I do think about food at home in the evenings so that's when I allow myself calories so I can eat. And it some times helps me to limit how many calories I do eat, cause I often get full eating so much in the evenings that I stop eating before I run out of calories!0

I'm actually asking on behalf of my mom. She's lost 46 pounds of er 50 pound goal, and hitting that goal would mean the world to her. She's 60 years old and has worked so hard. She was really disappointed that she didn't hit her goal when she had hoped, and she blamed her evening snaking. I wasn't able to give her advice because evening snacking isn't a problem for me. I just thought I could get some ideas from others out there. Thanks for your "input", Taso42.0 -
What are you doing when you are snacking at night? Sometimes you snack because its in your routine (like sitting down to watch a show/movie and grabbing a snack). If you want to try to stop snacking at night, maybe try to switch up your routine that involves the snacking.0

Sounds like she's done fantastic!
I would normally suggest trying to allow for some evening snacks in the calorie "budget", rather than trying to cut them out altogether. The reason being that meal timing will not affect weight loss, but feeling deprived very well might.0
