Off topic...but looking for answers

Hello all,

I know this is off topic but looking for some guidance/answers. Has anyone dealt with a loved one suffering from POCD (Post Operative Cognitive Delirium)? Basically going "crazy" after a surgery done at a hospital. The causes are still unclear but certain people are susceptible to it such as older age, post operative infection, substance abuse, certain medications.

My father in law is in his second week going through this after his second colon surgery. He's only 59 but started experiencing delirium within 48 hours. He's in ICU and we can't understand why he isn't getting "better". He's been on several psychotic drugs to help with this but it's very frustrating. He's got an infection in his abdomen as well he's battling. We need for him to get better so we can do his colostomy and then him better for chemo.

I'm just wondering if anyone has gone through this and can offer some insight?

No answer for you, but with such a specific question, if you don't get the answers you're looking for, you may consider reposting with the specific issue in the title so that the right people might open the thread.

What she said, plus post it in a different section. Probably Motivation and Support. A lot of serious minded people don't even end up in chit chat unless they are following a friend around the forums.

    Best of luck.

I had one family member with this...it resolved when the infection started noticeably improving.
  • My great grandma was diagnosed with POCD a year ago. She is 84 and has a lot of issues. She is in the hospital right now because she has been losing a lot of blood and they can't figure out what is causing it. Sorry got a little off subject. It is going to be hard on everyone and he will start forgetting things ( kind of like someone with alzheimer's). He may be scared to be alone in the house, so the best thing you or anyone can do is to be there for him, don't talk to him any different than you usually there, and spend as much time with him as you can.
