Asthma and Loosing Weight

Hi everyone, im new to this site as of today and like you all i want to loose weight and get healthy and do all the stuff i want to do. I know a lot of us probably have different illnesses and issues that can be seen as an issue to prevent us doing this and for me that has always been my asthma. What i have come to now realise is that my weight is in no way helping my asthma, i have seen all the specialists and have all the medication and im trying to control it as best i can. Granted now i do have chronic asthma and im pretty much allergic to all types of pollen, mould and animals etc so i have to be careful if i exercise out doors but i can still do it. If anyone on this site is an asthmatic i would love to hear from you. I have done searches on the site for asthma and nothing really has come back. I would love to hear other peoples experience and see if they have any tips or suggestions for me. I need to loose about 6 stone at this stage and im one of those emotional eaters. Im in one of those vicious circles that i get a bit fit and loose some weight and get sick and then eat myself into a black hole cause im upset im sick again etc and then i have to wait to get back into it. This time around that wait has now been six months and WAY OVERDUE. Im lucky that a friend of my sisters is trained in fitness and is going to help me with a diet and a programme for the gym. She has told me that she has a goal for me for October to work towards but is not telling me what it is- i suspect its a 5 mile run around Phenoix park here in Dublin for the Simon Community.
God it feels great to be able to say this all out loud as im always the bubbly ,happy go lucky person to everyone but inside its a totally different story. I have never thought of writing on one of these sites before and i would love to hear from someone. has anyone started one of those blogs? Maybe its an idea to help keep motivated? Thanks for reading xxx

I've always had athsma and terrible allergies as well, so I feel your pain! You are definitey taking the right steps! Losing weight will really help, but I've found that what has helped more than anything is RUNNING! I started running about a year ago and my athsma is basically non existent now. Getting your heart pumping and in shape will clear those airways and make you feel (and look) great! Good luck!!! :flowerforyou:0

I also have asthma and just revently starteds getting back into the gym in the last 2 weeks. I was reluctant about going to work out because of my asthma but then I realized I was using it as a cop out. Since I have been going my asthma has already improved from the cardio I've been doing and I am even more motivated to go to the gym because getting my asthma under control is an added bonus of living healthy.
The best advice I can offer is to not be afraid. If you have allergies tht affects your asthma, I suggest doing your work outs at an indoor gym for the first while until your asthma begins to improve from exercise. Do cardio that makes you breath heavy and eventually your lungs will get the exercise they need to become stronger, if you find youre too out of breath, take a break! The gym is about going as hard as you can, it's about going at a pace youre comfortable with while increasing your heart rate. Each time you go will be easier than the last.
Hopefully this is of some help to you
P.S- Take your asthma meds and take a rescue inhaler to the gym with you!!0 -
I've battled asthma my entire life while remaining very active. Allergies were a big trigger for my attacks, so was exercise. But taking my meds & having a rescue inhaler got me thru. Over time the reliance on the rescue inhaler decreased.
It can be a struggle, but stick with it, you can over come it. Good luck.0 -
I have exercise induced asthma so it can be a problem. I developed mine from doing water aerobics 2 hours a day. The chlorine burned my lung linings which had already been damaged by years of smoking. I had quit way before that. Doc says its not restrictive lung disease, it's asthma.
So I take my singulair daily in the morning and then I will use my inhaler about 10 minutes before starting my workout. The secret is to prevent it, not just treat the attack if possible. And at the first sign of wheezing I stop and rest and use my inhaler again if it keeps up. Took a couple of hospital visits and a cardiac cath to figure that out.
Good luck. Oh, I also seem to do better when I am hydrated.0 -
Honey!!!
Me at 200+lbs = Advair twice daily, Singular once daily, Claratin once daily, albuterol inhaler daily. I feel your pain!!
Me at 175 lbs = no more advair, singular, or claratin. Just occasional abuterol and reaaaaally watching those warning signs that an attack was impending.
Me at 150-something now: No daily meds. Albuterol inhaler 3 or 4 times a year, when I'm outdoors running, or when pollen season is killing me (although I've been doing great so far this pollen season), or when I have an upper respiratory/ chest cold.
I will never say that I am 'asthma free' but I will say I'm a 'recovering asthmatic'. Taking off the weight, training my lungs to be healthier through exercise..... My asthma rarely stops me anymore!!!!
I hope you use this as motivation. Lose the weight if only to come off all those meds!!! Okay, I should say that not everyone can come off their daily meds. That would be ludicrous of me to say, but lose the weight to lessen the severity and frequency of attacks. YOU CAN DO THIS!!!!!0
