Hold Ups

So, I think we all have things that could potentially hold us back, but the key is to push past them in the right way.

For me, I've broken my right heel 4 times, my left foot once because of overcompensation, and have had 3 concussions, and I have crazy issues because of all of those. My family jokes that I should get my feet replaced :p (The injuries are actually what caused me to gain weight initially...add sitting around and doing nothing for so many years to the diet of a typical teenager and you get massive weight gain.)

But, along with proper medical advice, I push past the hold ups of being in and out of a cast for so many years and the issues I still have with them...and still achieved my weight loss and have a healthy, active lifestyle.

The hold ups don't necessarily need to be physical though. What types of stuff do you all need to push past to get where you want?

I would have to say my knees. Sports in high school did a number on them. Its hard for me to go super heavy on legs because of it. But, i do my best to get in and get them done!

My hold ups could have been that I was working full-time and going to school full-time (taking a 15 hr course load), however, I did not let that keep me from working out six days a week.

Lol..regarding the weather, when I lived in Norway, they had a saying: "there's no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothing"...granted, I don't remember it ever being -30C while I was there!

Same here. I'm terrified of ice because of a bad fall where I broke my arm and injured my back. But, I try to make sure if I can't get out for a walk then I make up for it inside.

I came here expecting women in stockings. However, nice thread.

A big move and a change of job have been a massive hold-up for me, but the new year really kicked my *kitten* into gear.

full time education my whole life (this part isn't compulsory anymore), but I know where I want to be and this is the way it has to be.
Going to a boarding school from the age of 15-now means I have VERY limited control on my diet, it's eat those options provided or sneak down to the chip shop/corner shop.

currently the weather...today it's 0degrees C, woke up to ice followed by snow, followed by rain, followed by snow, followed by hailstones, back to snow...all day and it's still going.
  • Funny thing is...my hold up ended up being my motivation....im a single mom and when my daughter was born I was caring for a newborn on my own...hardly ever slept...was way too tired to even think about working out or even caring what I ate... when I was pregnant I ate perfectly healthy bc I KNEW what I put in my body went to her...I didnt gain a ton of weight from pregnancy or anything....it was after she was born I gained....well as she has grown (she is 2 now) I realized that while what I eat wasn't directly affecting her she is learning from me. It wasn't enough in my mind that I fed her healthy....I had to feed us both healthy. She motivated me to be a better example for her. So everytime that old hold up creeps in and I feel whiney bc im so tired from chasing her...I just remember that she is constantly watching and learning from me.

Have you spoken to a doctor about how to exercise without re-injuring yourself?

I have Psoriatic Arthritis which is a variation of RA.

I've started adding in weights to build bone strength back up and strengthen the muscles around my joints but it is a hold up. PsA is swelling of the membrane of the joint and deterioration of the bone, not the cartilage. I get so sore and cold after a workout that I am sick for the next 24 hours with a fever and flu symptoms! Really holds me up and makes me feel awful but I'm getting better and better with each workout that passes!
