My husband is having a very hard time eating all of his calories a day. He currently weighs 221 lbs. and is 6'2. He wants to get down to 210 lbs (which I don't think is possible because he has just started weight lifting and he is built big to begin with). He has MFP set to lose 1 lb. a week and 4 work outs a week for 40 mins each. He is supposed to eat 2,480 cals a day, but he typically burns 700-800 calories per work out because he loves to run, I'm talking balls to the wall, as fast as he can lol. He also has a very active job. What are some suggestions to help him eat his calories for the day? He can't really snack during the day because of his job, so he only eats breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and sometimes dessert. I tried getting him to eat higher calorie foods like avocado, peanut butter, etc, but he's kind of picky.

I was going to suggest peanut butter. I eat a peanut butter and honey sandwich every night to make up my calories.

Other than that he could eat a little more at each meal throughout the day.

Is he hungry? I'm asking seriously.

If he's not hungry, he shouldn't force himself to eat. Sometimes it can take your body a little while to get adjusted to a new activity level. After a few weeks of increased activity, he'll start to get hungry for more fuel, and it won't be as hard to get those calories in.

Protein drinks. If he drinks 12 oz of milk with the protein whey mix from Walmart it's nearly 400 calories. He can also eat chicken breasts which is good for protein and calories.

If he's doing cardio and weight lifting then he can burn off fat because he's still a little 'heavy', but he needs the calories and protein to maintain his lean body mass.

A good group to look into at MFP is Eat, Train, Progress. I'd suggest asking them the same question; lots of good knowledge in that group!

Just FYI, my husband's 6'3" and is 208# with 16% body fat, and he's planning to get down to 190 while maintaining about 15-16% body fat, so I think it's possible for yours to get down to 210#. Give him your confidence and admiration; he can do anything with you at his side!
  • Hi! Try lentils, barley and beans, they are packed full of energy and carbs. Falafels, homus, lentil curries (dahl) are all really tasty and really good for you as well. You can add kidney beans to a spaghetti sauce, canned chickpeas taste nice in salads and you can add barley to soups. They have a lot of nutrients and vitamins too!
Nuts are also really good! Almonds are low in oil/fat and are really good. While im at work i just have a pocket full of them and nibble on them throughout the day. Sultanas are full of natural sugars, therefore carbs, and they are pretty tasty.

Just quickly, im sure your husband would already know this but, I also do a lot of intense exercise and i find that after it really helps me recover if i have a milo! Theyre full of carbs and contain a high level of iron which is good for fighting fatigue in the muscles especially. If its been a particularly intense work out, then i have protein shakes, and by the sound so of it, your husband is extremely active and aiming to build muscle. Protein shakes are really good for the recovery of muscle and also building them. If he did, he would put on muscle weight relatively quickly.
    Hope this helps!!
