Early 30s, just starting, quit smoking, insulin resistant

I'm 33, married with 2 young kids, and working full time. I just joined MFP on New Year's day and also quit smoking (switched to e cigarettes). I've got a lot of weight to lose and I need support because I struggle with motivation and balancing everything I have going on. I'm also insulin resistant and would like some tips from others who are dealing with similar issues. Thanks and good luck to all!

Hi I gave up smoking after being ill 55 days ago using e cigs but I've put on a ton of weight and now I need to lose it. I'll add you and we can keep each other motivated.0

im 31, and stopped smoking mid april..using the e-cig, and i still want a REAL cig most of the time, but its healthier for everyone..i was afraid i was going to gain a lot of weight from it, but it was actually only a few pounds..feel free to add me, and good luck in this journey:drinker:0

Insulin resistance will yield to two things--exercise (try Aquacize--it's great!) and cutting back or eliminating sugar and simple carbs as they got the insulin resistance ball rolling in the first place. Your body will heal quickly at your age. Congratulations on quitting smoking--a real step in the right direction. :flowerforyou:
p.s. There is a new book out called, "The Fat Switch" by cardiologist/renal specialist, Richard J. Johnson, M.D. and it reads a bit like a research report but there is important information on Type II diabetes (and how to reverse it) and its link to cardiovascular disease and renal disease. Insulin resistance is the lead-up to Type II diabetes. It means that her body is creating plenty of insulin (in fact, it is likely that too much has been secreted for a number of years) but her cells are becoming less sensitive to it and allowing her blood sugar to run too high--a dangerous situation to allow to continue--as you well know. It isn't, at this stage, likely to be life-threatening but it must be dealt with.0 -
I'm 36 and same as you I quit smoking and started taking better care of myself. I am not insulin resistant, BUT I do follow a ketogenic diet. I can help with ideas on foods and meals. Friend me, my diary is open to my mfp friends.0

I love my e-cig but I use it way more than I smoke but at least it's healthy. I used to get breathless and was worried about becoming ill, so I just quit with my e-cig. I have already started cutting down on my nicotine levels, so that's a start. I hope to cut it down further in the future all the way to zero nicotine. If you have not tried giving up smoking then I would recommend you look into e-cigs. It has worked wonders for me.0

I found out I was insulin resistant through labs I had done from my doctor. It was when I was trying to get pregnant with no success and that was one of the things the doctors checked. I was diagnosed with PCOS (poly cystic ovarian syndrome) and put on Metformin. I tried different diets and lost some weight at times and did eventually get pregnant when I quit trying. With my two pregnancies I ended up not really gaining weight and actually lost about 20 pounds after, but then I've gained it all back plus more. My doctor repeated my labs a couple of months ago and my insulin levels had gone up, so she increased the Metformin and that helped, but I'm still not within the normal range yet. I want to get pregnant again in July and I had a lot of trouble with hip pain last time because of my weight and I also had preeclampsia after my son was born, so I'm trying to make some changes in my health to prepare.
I'm still using the e cigarette. It was a little tough at first. I felt like I wasn't doing it right. I watched a few YouTube videos and got comfortable with it. It's been 2 weeks and I haven't smoked a regular cigarette. I feel like my breathing is much better even though I was sick with the flu last week. My plan is to reduce the nicotine strength over time and quit altogether before getting pregnant.
Because I was sick with the flu I haven't really exercised much at all so far. Before starting MFP, I never exercised at all. In my first two weeks I exercised once each week, so that's a start I guess. I've really just tried to stay under my calorie limit. I've done that pretty much every day--definitely every day this past week. I weigh in in the morning, and I'm concerned I won't see any results. I know I'm not probably eating the healthiest foods right now but it seems like being under the calories should result in a loss. I've checked my weight a few times during the week and it's gone up, so I'm pretty anxious about the morning.
