squats with dumbells

I'm wondering how safe it is to do squats with dumbells. I want to start lifting heavy but I don't want to go to a gym and make a fool out of myself so staying at home it is. I plan on getting a bar and some weights but for now my dumbells will have to do.
So what I need to know is, should I just keep my arms down by my sides when doing squats? Or can I get away with just doing arm work outs for now until I get comfortable enough to go to a gym? I'm losing weight steadily but I want to start building muscle to help tighten up the loose skin and give me that sexy little 'V' you see on some awesome looking ladies

why don't you google "dumbell squats" and watch the youtube video's that come up? Copy the form you see.0

Also look up goblet squats.
ETA: How heavy are your dumbbells? You may find that you will outgrow them quickly if you don't have some that are pretty heavy or on which you can change the weight.
If you are still losing weight then you are likely eating at a caloric deficit. You will grow stronger but will likely not be building muscle.0 -

because then I'd have to open a whole new tab!! and type something! nah jk.. I just don't want to go and do something that may not be considered safe and end up hurting myself. Just because its on youtube doesn't mean its safe0 -

Now if you can get someone to do the exercises for you you'll be all set.0 -
I don't have a squat rack at home, so I do dumbbell squats.
As with any lift, you have to focus on proper form. They're perfectly safe as long as you know what you're doing. Any lift can be dangerous if done incorrectly.
In addition, I would look up Bulgarian split squats.0 -
I keep the dumbbells up under my chin. That way your abs have to work a little harder for balance. Plus they are just easier to grip and hold for a longer time that way.0

Look up Pistol Squats - all the home Leg work you are likely to need.0

I did the weight machines at the Y for years.
It wasn't until I started taking a weightlifting class that I learned proper technique, was really challenged and started seeing more results.
I felt like a fool at first, but everyone does.
Be brave!
It's worth it0
