What Foods Are You Avoiding or Diet do you follow?

I am wondering what foods do you avoid being on a diet? and what diet plans do you kind of work your food around ( Atkins, South Beach and Etc) I am asking as I am trying to better myself and help myself loose weight healthier and keep it based around a good diet and rules to follow. I know to stay away from soda, high fructose corn syrup and anything artificial and such. I eat meat rarely and eat soy in a limited amount as well to keep it balanced. :) so any information, websites or in put is awesome!!

I don't avoid any food, i only don't eat as much as I used to.

I use Skinnytaste.com to adjust my favorite recipes and make them have less calories.
  • I'm not on a diet per say. I've just been conscientious to how much I'm eating now. I have upped my fitness level in small increments as to not hurt myself. Then as my stamina built I started pushing myself going from a small .75 mile run to 5 miles non stop. I don't limit my taste buds. I still like my rum on the weekend, I still eat my ribs when I get the cravings. By not making it a "diet" per say it made it easier to transition to. Diets to me sound very temporary, meaning they have an ending date. I've worked at loosing 30 lbs and it looks good on me. The routine that I've made for myself is very sustainable so therefore it wont end. This is my new lifestyle. I don't freak out if I'm out with friends and I decide to chomp down a Bigmac. I just simply (with the help of MFP calorie counter) stay within my goals the best I can and stay more on the move than more on the couch.

^^ This. I count my calories and macros. That's it. The easier it is, the more likely it is that you'll succeed.

No bread, no pastries, no milk, easy on the cheese, beware the dreaded addictive cashews. No sugar except what happens to be in veggies. Alcohol rarely because it gives me the munchies something fierce.

Too bad for the low carb food manufacturers that I also decided while I was heading this route to cut out all the preservatives, malto-dexi-whatsis, and whatever other chemicals lurk in processed foods. So I don't eat the bars, the protein shakes, the tiny teaspoonful of food that comes in frozen dinners, or anything like that, either.

    A healthy vegan LIFESTYLE.

So no meat, dairy, eggs, animal by-products as defined by "vegan" and no crap foods like artificial sweeteners, excessive sodium, bad fats, trying to avoid GMO foods, etc.

I really have portion control issues and I could possibly win every eating contest out there. So, I try to stick with a lower carb diet. I don't really have a number of carbs I am sticking to but I make sure every meal has a substantial amount of protein and low carbs. Also, I have picked a few things out of diets that I like.

maltodextrin is food but high GI lol.

I'm with everybody else really, if you eat less calories then you use, you should lose weight.

However, its worth pointing out that a bagel has a higher glycemic index and glycemic load then a donut. That means the carbs in it are ultimately absorbed at a faster rate and therefore have more potential to spike your blood sugar (GI) and there are more carbs in it (GL). The nutritionist told me that from a weight loss persepective your better off eating a donut then a begal.

Table sugar (sucrouse) actually has a much lower GI then white bread or pasta. Which really means that pasta is potentially more fattening then candy.

If you find this hard to believe i implore you to do your own research rather then just disregard it.

  • I try to never consume high fructose corn syrup, artificial sweeteners, and hydrogenated oils -- so no juice or soda or sports drinks -- and very little packaged foods (I read labels). I reserve desserts for special occasions, but generally concentrate on eating a balanced diet focused on portion control, along with an exercise routine. It's a lifestyle I'm adopting, not a weight loss "diet."

The only things I have totally cut out are soda and trans fats (man made). Other than that everything is fair game!
  • I don't follow a diet. I follow a budget, so everything is permitted in moderation. If you have a special event where you know it will almost impossible to stick within your calorie goals for the day without packing your own lunch, "save" up for it for a few days by running a little bit larger (but not too much) deficit and adding a few minutes to your workouts. (PS, don't let my ticker fool you. I recently reset it to be 50 pounds less after letting distractions interrupt my progress to remind myself that I still have lots of work to do, so I've lost 61 pounds, not 8. It worked to get me back on track).

OP, you will find many people on here who have been very successful for YEARS. Never had to restart a "diet", never had to do something drastic. What I have learned is that dieting doesnt not = losing weight. Changing your LIFESTYLE does. I dont give up anything. Booze? Pffft. I am going to have it...but only on weekends. Candy? Ill have a bit, still count it and wont over indulge. Do I want some fatty mexican? Hell yes I do. And I will eat to my hearts content when I want to. But I am also exercising, and making sure that I eat well the other days. Eating healthy shouldnt feel like a chore. Ever.

Maintain a calorie deficit. Avoidance of foods is not necessary. Everything in moderation. I swear people just WANT to make it more difficult than it is.

idk, some things if i start eating i just get on a roll, like soda.

If your the kind of person like that it may make sense to avoid foods that you have 'trouble' controling yourself with.

I'd have to think that if you can eat a resonable amount of whatever you want and still lose or maintain thats a definet recipe for success...

but most people i know who are successful over the long term, and 30+ are pretty picky about what they eat so, idk.

There are only two things I really avoid...soda and sandwiches. Everything else is good as long as it fits in my macros :-)

I am making a lifestyle change, should have made it clear not a diet and do it for a little then ditch it. I just wanted to know what others are doing and if they are doing it what ones do they use :) just wanted to make it known. Also I cant go vegan as my doctor has decided at this time my body issues I have wouldn't be able to handle just what vegan food has to offer is what I am taking from my doctors words.

I should say...I havent had a coke now for 2 weeks. That is because Coke is a huge weakness for me. But I have had 2 diet cokes since then as a way to remind me that it is still ok to have once in awhile.

Im sorry, I wasnt trying to be rude :)

When you say "Diet" on here, sometimes people get a little punchy :)
  • High protein, low carb. I also love the book '400 Calorie Fix'. It helped me a lot with portion control.

Personally I avoid deep fried anything. That's my biggest problem. I do have deep fried cauliflower once every 6 weeks or so, but generally avoiding the fried stuff saved my life. I was eating it 4-5 times a week before...huh...THAT'S why I was fat. Oh, no, that was the worst of 1817363 reasons. Lol

Spoken by someone who is obviously lucky enough to have never eaten a single slice of whole wheat bread and then mysteriously turned into a ravenous hog the rest of the day.

I dunno why I'm like that, I'd rather not be. I'd love to be able to have a piece of chocolate now and then or a tiny bag of chips, but nope, can't do it. I tried. I was always fighting those cravings and an insatiable hunger, and I hate feeling hungry.

Damn it. I'm envious. Maybe someday. I don't think so, but maybe.

Come to think of it, my vitamins have a little sugar and crud in them, but it's obviously not enough to be a problem.
