Hi MFP friends...who knows about sodium and what happens to it when you cook the food?
I bought some Jenni O turkey brats that have 700mg sodium each. I boil them for 15 min and then pan fry them for another 5 to make them brown....I'm thinking after I do all that some of that dang sodium should have come out, right?...any thoughts?

Funny, I work for Jennie-O. I don't know the answer to this right off-hand, but I do have our consumer information line handy --- it's 1-800-621-3505.0

LOL!!!! I don't think it is a Jenni O question though, probably more a nutrition thing, probably applies to all processed meats..Thanks though! I'd feel so stupid calling and asking this because it doesn't really have to do with their specific product.0 -
I'd not worry too much about that level of sodium as long as you dont overdo sodium in other areas of your diet on the same day. I think the level to keep it under is 3500mg (I think) so you should be okay.0

No worries!! I work in customer service and we get people that call ALL the time with preparation and nutrition questions. I even had a guy call from California and ask what kind of bread we had used for a sandwich pictured in an ad in his paper......
But anyhoo ---- I would think that some of that sodium is lost during preparation!0 -

My nutrition coach wants me to keep it under 2400mg so it is something I have to pay a lot of attention to. I don't over do sodium, it just adds up real quick. Trying to find ways of cutting it down w/o having to take out ALL the processed meats.0 -
I watch my sodium too and from what I have read up on sodium there isn't any cooking method that you can do to remove the sodium from processed meats. Once it is in there it's there to stay because they use sodium nitrate which is a chemical and different in composition than regular table salt. If any of the sodium did come out in the boiling water it would probably be so tiny it wouldn't be worth counting.
Unfortunately to cut down on sodium processed meats need to be eaten sparingly because as you can see from the 700mg in nutritional info there is a lot in there! I have gone to cooking roasts on Sundays and then slicing the meat for lunches during the week, much better for you and just as convienent during the week as it is already cooked. Good luck!0
