I Don't Know What to do Anymore

I looked on my scale yesterday and saw that I was 135lbs. I was ECSTATIC! I lost 7lbs, or so I thought.
So I weighed myself this afternoon after I got out of the shower and saw that I was 150.

I realized that I had used the scale in my mom's bathroom, which is carpeted, and used the scale today on a flat, tiled surface.

I am beyond upset. I thought I had actually done something awesome and to find out that I didn't even lose weight I GAINED it is just horrible to realize.

This morning I started doing the Wii Fit with Yoga and Strength stuff and I did Tae-Bo with Billy Blanks. It was a workout, but now I feel like I'm not doing squat. I'm counting calories I'm doing what I'm supposed to be doing, but nothing seems to be enough.

I need some SERIOUS support and encouragement because I REALLY don't want to give up. I REALLY don't, but I don't know what to do anymore.

Your weight will be different on different scales, at different times of day, and at different days of the month. Chill the fruck out.

Always weigh yourself after your morning ablutions, in your skivvies or naked, on a tile floor, after you wake up before eating anything.

I'm always 2-3 pounds heavier in the afternoon. Add a towel and wet hair to that, and you have another couple pounds.

Scales weigh lighter on carpet, so moving it to the tile was a good idea, but don't weigh yourself in the afternoon after a shower again. Weigh yourself first thing in the morning after you use the bathroom but before you take a shower.

On Tuesdays, except in months that end in "y" unless there's a full moon.

Seriously, weigh yourself once a week under the exact same conditions or you're going to drive yourself batty with the water weight changes.

When do you normally weigh yourself? What scale do you usually use.

Your weight can vary 5 or more pounds through the day, even using the same scale. You'll generally weigh the least first thing in the morning after going to the bathroom because there's little food in your digestive tract and your bladder is empty. Through the day you eat and drink, which adds weight (but not fat or muscle). Clothes also can make a big difference. And scales can be vastly different (carpeting underneath may also contribute).

Other factors, if you've done everything else consistently, could be water retention from excess sodium or from muscle training (they can retain water as they heal sometimes), TOM (again, mostly water), etc. I would keep going forward and wait a few days to weigh yourself. It's unlikely that you gained (or lost) 7-8 lbs of fat or muscle in just a few days. And even with a temporary setback, it's better for your body to be active and exercising and eating the right amounts of the right foods.

  • You need to pick one set of scales and a time of day when you weigh yourself, anything else is going to fluctuate like crazy. My suggestion is weigh yourself before breakfast in the morning after you've used the toilet but before you have a shower, you'll still see fluctuations but they'll be far less that way.

I've seen sudden unexplained rises even doing that of five or six pounds that disappear a couple of days later (I don't weigh every day). If you're not starving yourself and counting your calories properly you'll see slow but steady weight loss.

Water weighs an incredible amount, 1 litre (just over 2 pints) weighs a kilo (just over two pounds) so if you had a large drink and then didn't dry yourself particularly well after the shower you'll be heavier.

my old scale would weigh different on different parts of my floor..(old hardwood)... so relax..chances are you are not 150 or 135. If i were you.. I'd solve the scale issue.. put it in one place and always weigh right there.

for me? i'm losing..but my pants are tighter? i'm trying not to freak out either!!lol.

I agree with previous post. Noone can fluxuate that much so quickly. Weigh yourself the first thing in the morning wearing the same clothes or nothing, on the same scale on a hard floor. Try not to move the scale around a lot. Ive noticed that can mess mine up. Also watch your sodium because tnat can add a pound or so for a couple of days. Good luck! Hang in there! You can acheive your goals.

    Tough Love :)

I weigh myself once a week on a somewhat sh*tty scale that gives me good general readings. I can tell whether or not I go up or down but don't worry about the number.

Get a good set of measurements and a caliper to track fat loss and lean muscle increases...

What was your starting weight? It looks like you joined earlier this month - if you were around 150 before, it would seem unlikely that you dropped to 135 in just a couple of weeks.

The good news is that it is also just as unlikely (if you started lower) that you GAINED up to 150. The body does weird things when we start messing with its food supply. Other posters have great ideas about the scale, you'll do fine!

Throw the scale in storage. Weight yourself 1 time a month at most.

    Now

This is important. Just measure yourself every week and view results on that instead of pounds. Because who cares what you weigh its about how you look. Weight is horribly misleading because water weight always flux's. So save yourself the headache and eat right, exercise, and enjoy your life.

No way. I use it as a term of endearment - it means I care!

Woah, this kind of relationship with your scales is so destructive!!

What is more important to you?

    135lbs 27 inch waist

    125lbs 28 inch waist

    Do you get my point?

Oh my gosh! I DEFINITELY did not expect all of this love and support!!

Thank you all SO MUCH it means a great deal that there are people here who support me and want to see me do well!

I'M THROWING MY FREAKING SCALE AWAY! :D I'M NOT LOOKING AT IT ANYMORE!!!!!

I mean to be real, my parents have seen a difference in me, even though I don't. To me, that's all that matters and should matter right now. If other people can see it, then forget me!

another thing to pay attention to:

how, when the weight on the scale is low, we feel like the best person in the world, love ourselves, strut with head held high.

then, when the number is higher, we hate ourselves, want to give up, but what has changed, really?

aren't we the same person? why do we make our worth so dependent on that number.

love the idea of measuring tape over scale...might try that sometime!

Then again, I'm feeling really overwhelmed with the whole process of losing weight. I just want to be able to do what will make me FEEL the best and be done with it.
    Does that make sense?

This is very relevant, and should certainly be read by a lot of the female population on this site, myself included.
It is why I stopped going on the scale for a while, and why I weigh weekly at most. I used to weigh daily, and my mood and self confidence was ruled by whether that number had gone down or up.

Also, make sure you are focussed on healthy eating, getting the right balance of foods, including lots of variety, fruits, vegetables, lean meats and fish, beans, cottage cheese, yoghurt etc etc. A lot of processed foods or high salt foods can tend to have you retain a lot of extra fluid, and for myself personally, although I believe overall caloric intake counts the most, I find that I weigh more when my foods are more processed, or fried/bready etc etc.

Yes it makes sense. And that IMO should be your goal anyway: to find a way of eating and moving that will keep you in good health AND keep you happy for the rest of your life.

If you don't, and you just suffer through 'losing weight' by eating stuff you don't like in portions you don't like and doing exercises you don't like, afterward you will just go back to what you've been doing... then you're going to gain back all the weight and once again be at the same point where you started or like many people, higher than before. The cycle is what people call yo-yo dieting.

It sounds overwhelming at first but you've got plenty of time to figure it out and make little changes here and there to stay in (but slowly adjust) your comfort zone the entire time, until your comfort zone happens to be what also keeps you in great health.

There is no benefit to starving or depriving yourself, now or in the future. If you try to focus on eliminating everything that might possibly be "bad" and do stuff like "I can never eat ___ again" then you aren't going to have much fun with it. ;) Just log everything, and then look at your log and see if there are things you can substitute or new things you can try to make improvements here and there, and find what works for you.

Right! I understand where you're coming from, but what I REALLY don't want to do is have to compromise. I've tried that before and it didn't work AT ALL. It was like I was starving myself. I was only eating salads, yogurt, and apples, all day every day. It drove me CRAZY.
I just want to be able to eat without having to worry about that number...does that make sense? I mean I don't go out every night, I have a home cooked meal. I feel like I'm overwhelming myself honestly haha

I always take my "real" weight in the morning. But I do weigh myself from time to time throughout the day and I always fluxuate. I drink 2 liters of water at work ~5lbs, plus food, you don't get rid of it all at once.
