Can someone explain to me about BMR and TDEE??? In layman terms or just help me figure it out? Just message me. I'm confused and really want to loose weight. One website said my BMR is 1999.4 and then MFP says daily intake calories is 2,130. Will this help me loose weight? Or am I still going to maintain. I burn above 200+ calories everyday with exercise. HELP!!!! ps. my TDEE says its 2858
I know i've seen this posted somewhere before; but with all the answers different. Whats the best? I want to loose 1lb a week. Thanks in advance!!!!

Someone will surely correct me if I'm wrong, but as I understand it:
BMR= how many calories you burn just by existing, as if you were to lay in bed all day
TDEE= how many calories you use in an average day through work, I walk my dog and don't consider it exercise really so that is part of my TDEE.
If you are burning 200 calories through exercise and can reduce the amount of calories you take in by 300, you should lose around a pound per week.
EDIT: MFP has 2100 as your daily goal? I would shoot to eat around 2000 calories/day and burn 200 calories through exercise and see where that gets you in a couple weeks. Weight loss is a lot of shifting things around and experimenting before you hit what is right for you. Once you get in stride, weight will fall off!0 -

Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR); is the number of calories you'd burn if you stayed in bed all day.
Determining how many calories you need can be done by using a TDEE (Total Daily Energy Expenditure) calculator. The TDEE calculator calculates your BMR and your Lifestyle and puts those numbers together. This number is what you need if you are to MAINTAIN your weight. If you are trying to lose weight, than you want to lower this number. Remember, there are 3500 calories in 1 lb. If you want to lose 1 lb, then you need to reduce your calories by an average of 3500 cal.0 -
Hi, I'm an Exercise Science student at the University of Nebraska Kearney and we had to do all of these calculations last semester in Fitness Testing Class I took, so I'll try to break it down for you.
BMR is Basal Metabolic Rate, which basically means how many calories your body burns just staying alive. This does not include any physical activity or exercise. As you loose weight this will decrease, as your body will require less calories for physiological processes (that keep you alive).
TDEE is Total Daily Energy Expenditure, basically what the definition states, or in other words how many total calories your body burns per day. This calculation also includes BMR along with calories you burn performing activities of daily living or a job plus any calories burned from exercise.
1 lb = 3500 calories. So if your goal is to loose 1 lb per week, you need to create a calorie debt of 3500 per week or 500 per day. Creating this debt can be done by diet alone or exercise alone. However, the best method is a combination of the two.
It looks like MFP is creating a debt of 728 (2858-2130=728) calories per day, thus leading to a 5096 (728*7=5096) calorie deficit per week or 1.5 (5096/3500=1.456) lbs. per week, so yes you would loose weight this way. Also, it's a safe range of weight to loose per week, because you don't want to loose more than 1-2 lbs per week.
I hope this makes more sense now and I haven't confused you even more. Good luck with the weight loss journey!0
