Hello!

Hi there
newbie here.
started on Monday - i weighed in on Monday at 184.8lbs but i think it was a bit abnormal as i am back down to 178.2lb this morning as i have been for the last 6 weeks or so.

ideally i would like to be down at the 165lbs by the end of April and if possible down to 140 by the end of the year. - 38lbs in 49 weeks - i think that should be achieveable!

kind of got some support around me, my mum is always on a diet and 2 of the guys i work with are 'healthy eating' their way through the new year, plus 1 guy is a gym bunny who is always encouraging as far as exercise goes.

i have been wondering though - do i join a gym? our local one is doing an offer of £29.99 per month for 12 months and you get swim, sauna, steam, gym, exercise classes all included. if i did a gym session, swim and then sauna - it would cost £11.80 a time so its a good saving but i'm not sure. i think i could afford it - maybe cut back on the chocolate ha ha!

anyhoo, thought i'd stop by and say hello!

thanks
Em

  • Welcome to MFP! It's great that you are here, feel free to add me if you are looking for some extra support!

I joined a gym at the start of last year and admittedly didn't use it nearly as much as I could've/should've but thanks to MFP I think I will really be able to have a crack at it this time. It depends on your workout style I guess, if you prefer to run around your neighbourhood or have exercise equipment at home then you might not need the gym right now, but if you prefer to use actual equipment then the gym sounds perfect. I'm from Australia so use AUD instead of pounds, but it still sounds like a good deal that your gym is offering, so why not! :)

Hope to speak to you soon, all the best with your goals!
  • I haven't joined a gym due to lack of money but if you feel you will use it, join! :D
My local library loans exercise DVDS so I can try what I want for £2 a week and see what I enjoy :) I also tend to walk everywhere, as I don't drive. You don't need to spend money if you don't want to :)

I also jog on the spot while watching my favourite TV programs to get my heart pumping hee hee! :)

hello! I am a newbie as well. Started using myfitnesspal last week. I dont think you need to enroll in gym. Walking will also help. I hope we will be able to religiously use this app and succeed.

Hi, I am new to this site too. I feel you will have to make that choice to join a gym or not. Gyms can be very expensive. Some gyms have free pass's. I would suggest you try out the gym (if possible) before joining to make sure it is something you would use.

My self, I joined a gym here for 3 months and loved it. it was a 24hr one (work 3rds) so on my days off, it was great to go at 2-3am. The only reason I didn't keep going is the cost. it was $114.00 a for 3 months.

I now have joined our towns Recreational center. My employer got us all a good deal for $99.00 a year (last year..ends Feb. 1st) and this year it is 105.60 for the whole year. This includes the excersise room, out door pool, indoor pool, hot tub, racket ball courts, basket ball , and tennis courts. It is a really good deal and I just put in for my next year subscription to the Rec. Center.

Before I could aford the cost of a gym, I did excersicing at home. I have the complete set of Richard Simmons "dancing to the oldies". I various excersice equipment. (nothing big like tread mill, bike etc). just medicine ball, weights from 3lbs up to 10lbs. streatch bands, balancing ball. numerous videos for different parts of body work out, and I just bought a 5 disc set for zumba with instructions to learn the moves, etc. lower impact to higher impact. (always wanted to do zumba.. but felt I would stick out in class not knowing what I was suppose to do). I also would take long fast walks. I would plan long walks on my days off. Like walk 2 miles to town and then go to the court building and climb their stairs and come back down (4 floors). then head back home :)
