Bad Gym Stories

Every gym has rude people and *kitten*. So let's hear your worst gym experiences.

I have two.

1. Ballys (NW side of Chicago) - guy probably in his late 40's early 50's has his bag right in front of my locker. I had just finished my workout and wanted to shower. I ask him politely if he could move his bag. No reply. I ask him again. Still no reply and he walks away. This locker room is not very big and there's not a lot of space to put things by the lockers. So I take his bag, which is blocking his locker and put it on the floor. A few minutes later he comes back and starts screaming at me in Russian or whatever Eastern European language he was speaking. All I made out was why the f**k did you move my bag??? (Picture John Malkovich as Teddy KGB in the movie Rounders) I told him sir I asked you twice to move your bag which was blocking my locker and you didn't do it. He basically then said he'd be waiting out in the parking lot for me. I shower, change, go outside and the guy was nowhere to be found. Big talking *kitten*.

2. Ballys (Glendale Heights, IL) - they have a really nice indoor track. Unfortunately these three guys use the running track to socialize. Several times on several occasions they would literally stop in the middle of the track and talk. I almost plowed into them on more than one occasion because you can't really see around the corners too well there. OMFG!! *kitten*! If you guys want to socialize, there's a frickin' Starbucks right down Army Trail Road. Then they had this one lady friend who you could literally smell a half mile away because she used so much perfume. UGH!!

Let's hear your bad gym stories! Go... :)

Sorry, but i don't like to participate in negativity. If i did, I'd participate in the fast food thread over in F&N right now
  • Hilarious. and this is why i don't go to Bally's.

The only thing thing I can think of is Sunday night a lady was belting out gospel at the top of her lungs on the rowing machine behind my treadmill. Luckily she was only on it a short time.

There's another fast food thread in F&N tonight??? Then what am I doing in F&E???

(Oh, and my on-topic comment: my "gym" is in my basement, so I don't have any dbag stories.)

    LOL..that would aggravate me :)

Ballys have not gotten better since LA Fitness bought them out. The Ballys on Cumberland is by my work and I used to live by the one in Glendale Heights. I refuse to go to either of them unless it's absolutely necessary (i.e. I want to run on a track since it's too cold to run outside now) They are very, very dirty. The LA Fitness in Oakbrook by where I live now is super super nice. Probably one of the nicest gyms I've ever gone to. I love it there!

I've only been to the gym when i don't have to pay recently, but I'm heading towards the gym in the shed option in the long run. For me, it's being patronised that really winds me up. At a step class, when the teacher told us to choose the height of our step according to our height (makes sense), another, far older, very fit member of the class felt the need to tell me not to, because it would be very hard. Firstly, I'll do what the teacher says, and secondly, just because you haven't seen me before doesn't mean I've never done this before! I was fine with the higher step. Another time I arrived late to a Zumba class and the teacher was scared I might not have warmed up enough. I said I'd walked there and was warm enough (ok, not stretched, but muscles definitely warmed up) and to take it easy. Again, just because you've never met me doesn't mean I don't know my own body. Again, no problem.

So, for now, videos, kettlebells and Zumba on the wii, and maybe converting the shed in future.

Wow that's kind of rude for someone who doesn't know you to say that. Sheesh!! I hear what you're saying. Now mind you I'm like 6'2" and well over 300 lbs but my *kitten* can run on the treadmill. I can go 6.5 with no problem. One time I was running and when I got off, some guy came up to me and said to me "for a big guy you sure can run." LOL

I had a guy who would stop lifting to watch me when I was on the elliptical, make comments when I would go into the kettlebell room about women and lifting and that I must be a badass cause I do kettlebells.

First gym I had a membership to was a hole in the wall one. Very "dungeonesk". Anyway everyone at the time was drinking whole milk, eating steak, etc. with Joe Weider protein powder introduced.
So one of the biggest guys is doing squats when me and my training partner hear a "thrurp, psfft" sound. The guy doing squats **** all over himself and continued his set.
After he went into the bathroom and 5 minutes later he comes out, his shorts wet. *kitten* rinsed his shorts off and put them back on!!!! Then he went over to the leg press and continued his workout.
Later that week, I joined Gold's.............

The only one I can think of off hand is at the gym in my building, I was on the elliptical and had put my stuff in the water bottle slots. The guy next to me (who was in jeans and loafers on the elliptical next to me) kept farting rank farts, then when I went to take my stuff out of the water bottle slots, discovered that someone had decided to discard their chewed gum into one of the lots. So I had somebody's nasty chewed gum stuck all over my keys.

We have a guy at my gym that showers and styles his hair before coming to the gym to work out, when he is there, he takes 20 minutes between sets on a machine. We have one guy that gets on the stairmaster and does back kicks, I think he does it to see if he can kick a passer by in the head. One day it'll be me he almost kicks, when that day comes he will find his flaming leg hitting the rail of the stairmaster.

A couple of years ago, someone in a kickboxing class that I attended at my gym told me that they did not appreciate me kicking so high and punching so hard because it looked like I was going to hurt them. Then he proceeded to complain on me and try to get me kicked out of the class all together.

Funny, when I was getting certified to teach Turbo Kick I was doing the same thing and the instructor praised me and told me that I was doing exactly what I needed to do to burn a lot of calories and make the workout energetic for the others taking my class...

there's these two teenage girls that hang out at the gym at the same time I go. They often sit on machines for a very long time, doing very little exercise and mostly texting and gossiping. It wouldn't be a big deal except they're on the machines the place happens to only have one-of-each of. They have about 100 treadmills but only one leg press/adductor/abductor.

those same girls are also rude to people in classes- not just me. They'll come into the class and pick their spot. doesn't matter if it's two inches in front of me .....or if I'm already in that spot.... they have literally moved my mat/weights so that they could get their favorite spot in the corner of mirrors.

    they just annoy me.

I was on the treadmill earlier today and the person who got on the one next to me REEKED of cigarette smoke. I'm not one to judge if you smoke (I used to partake in the nasty habit too...) but at least spray yourself with [not too much] some nice smelling body spray or Febreeze...

Nothing too bad, but I do my martial arts classes at a gym. One day, we had an annual five-hour training camp. We started and ended in the studios, but needed to move elsewhere in the middle when a yoga class was scheduled for that studio. I don't know why, but the yoga ladies gave us the dirtiest looks . . .
  • All of the Problems in my gym seem for me to be centered around the steam room and it's regulars!
This preticular group likes to poor water on the thermostat forcing me out by the second cycle then they go out to the baby wading pool and dunk! This really erks me because it's gross an my daughter swims there! And believe me if she or any other child were directly in there I would say something right then and there! But as it is they do it late at night repeatedly for hours running back and forth from steam room to pool. All the while soaking the hall floor. Someone should tell them you can't sweat out sausage!
Ps. Whats up with the moaning noises in the steam/sauna keep that sh** to yourself

My gym is pretty small and the only barbell available is in a squat rack.

At certain times it seems half of the local under-16s rugby squad are huddled round it, egging each other on to see who can bench press the most for 1 rep...

Which is all good (idiotic) fun, but I have a bench press set to complete myself....

I'd call that an admirable amount of commitment to the workout.
