New here and need support

I am Michelle, 43, mother of 4. My oldest is 21 and I have 10 yr old bbg triplets. I work part time as a lunch aide at an elementary school 2 hours a day.
I have two large hernias that I am trying to get surgically repaired. I went to University of Michigan 2 days ago for an evaluation because it is to much for the general surgeon. The dr there was very negative and flat out said to me "lose 100 lbs and come back and see me" he also told me "the hernia's won't kill you but the surgery might". This is not the answer I was looking for. It took me a couple of hours to stop crying and go home to the triplets.

At the U of M appt I weighed in at 293. This is the biggest I have ever been and no I am not happy with it. I am also diabetic and getting put on insulin on Monday.

What I need help with is getting motivated to exercise and to find a buddy to exercise with. Also dinners. If I was just cooking for myself it would be easy but I am cooking for myself, 3 10 yr olds (2 are picky) and a picky husband. There are days I just need something quick for dinner. I am open to any suggestions.

Nice to meet you in advance and thank you.
Michelle

    HI Michelle,

Welcome. I will be more than happy to motivate and support you. My name is Dana. Nice to meet you. Similarly speaking, my husband and son are picky eaters and I usually have to make myself something different, depending on what it is, but I am okay with that because what I eat is important to me. Some great meal ideas are baked chicken breast or fish (that does not take long) with some veggies. I also started doing a lot of smoothies (protein) with my new kitchen appliance that I recently purchased. They are very filling as well and so healthy for you. The key is to eat several smally meals a day... eat every 2-3 hours or so and you will never be hungry. I may start off with some oatmeal with fresh berries and tea, then 2-3 hours later, eat a piece of fruit, then 2-3 hours later have a salad and a greek yogurt, etc. Once you get started, it becomes a way of life.

As far as the exercicse, where do you live? Are you used to doing exercise? If not, you definitely want to take baby steps and not dive in. Let me know what medical restrictions you have and what you can and cannot do and I can help you with this.

I hope this helped to start, and I am always here!!

    Cheers to a new beginning!

    Dana

    HI Mchelle,
I sent you a friend request! This is a great site for motivation and support and also for food ideas! I have gotten so many tips from my MFP's! Plus tracking your food in your food diary really helps you see where your biggest problems are.
One of my suggestions for always having healthy food is PREPARATION! With a family your size, Im sure you are already doing that to an extent, but I like to take it further. I try to plan most of my weekly meals on a the weekend, and then I will spend an hour sunday night cooking brown rice (cook a lot, it keeps in the fridge for days) chopping onions and other veggies I will need, and have everything stored in baggies or tupperware. Ill even grill myself a pound of chicken and then eat it for a few days (again, it keep in the fridge for a few days) That way when I need to throw a meal together quickly, the prep work is done. Or in your case, if you have to make yourself something different than you are making for your picky eaters, its right there for you!
Also, I have a suggestion for picky eaters! Hide their veggies! I have 2 kids, 6 & 3, who HATE veggies! I have gotten very good at disguising them! When I make hamburgers, meatloaf, meatballs, etc.....I use a cheese grater to grate up zucchini or other squash and I mix it into the meat. It's practically tasteless, and its transparent so you cant see it (as long as you peel it first) I even made my kids banana bread and grated 3/4 of a zucchini into the batter! They have NO idea its there, and I feel better that they are getting veggies!
Good luck and if I can help in any way, i am happy to do it!
