Question about body fat %

Okay – 5’5” 23 year old female. Starting weight 180lbs, 40.9% body fat 2 months ago. Now I am 159.4lbs, 35.9% body fat. So I lost 20.6lbs and 5% body fat…does that sound about right? Also, when I do the military body fat calculator on www.fat2fitradio.com and put my measurements in from when I started @ 180lbs it says my lean body mass was 106.3. Now it is 102.4. Does this mean I lost muscle? Is that bad or normal?

Hello,
Congratulations on your progress so far!
I haven't done the math for your case, but I can tell you that when loosing weight you cannot avoid also losing muscle mass. A 50%/50% muscle/fat loss ratio is pretty common, really sophisticated training approaches can bring this to a more (muscle) favorable 3/1 ratio.
This one reason why having a weight lifting regime while losing weight is very important. And that is of course a re-inforcing circle because more muscle burns more calories... :-) And don't be afraid of "bulking up" when entering a moderate weight lifting regime. :-)
Hope this helps!
