vegan cheese

So oddly enough after 14 years of vegetarianism I had never tried vegan cheese before today. I love cheese and I try to limit it because it has so much saturated fat, so i decided to try vegan cheese because it has no saturated fat. I tried Vegan Gourmet Cheddar and I was very dissappointed. I did not expect it to be a taste alike, but I figured I would at least like it. I found it to have a weird taste/smell that put me off and I don't know if I can force myself to eat the rest of the package. I don't want to give up altogehter, so if anyone has tried other flavors or brands that they liked I'd love some feedback. Also, how is vegan cream cheese?

  • I really like "Veggie Shreds" from Galaxy Nutritional, the mozzarella flavor is the best, and it melts just like real cheese. I've had the same experience with the 'funky taste' with a few other brands ... I also like Soy Slices.. I think Melissa's makes em? Happy hunting!

Try the Galaxy Nutritional we really like it. The mozzarella is good on veggie pizza.
  • I like the Toffutti products, but I am not sure if they are vegan - just dairy-free. I also have found a number of good recipes online for making cheese-like substances. Most of the recipes use nutritional yeast for flavoring. Most of my recipes come from: http://dairyfreecooking.about.com/ but I also post ones I have tried (and modified) on my website. Recently I tried a recipe for vegan ravioli (http://n8urm0m.wordpress.com/2010/04/17/vegan-ravioli/) that turned out pretty good. My daughter (1 1/2ys old) loves it! Best of luck to you!

The veggie slices from Galaxy Nutritional aren't vegan.

I've tried the Rice Vegan cheese and I couldn't stand it either. I managed to finish the package but I melted it on my veggie burgers so I had plenty of other things to help cover the flavor - lettuce, mustard, tomato, etc. LOL!

I think I'm just about finished with cheese altogether now.

you could also try daiya (yummo! check http://www.daiyafoods.com/where.html for where you can buy it) or chezly (it's from redwood foods; i haven't tried it, but heard it was good).
