Coffee beneficial to weight loss?

Is coffee (1-2 cups a day) beneficial to weight loss drinking it plain? I heard it raises your metabolism. Any ideas on this? Thanks!

Here’s the good news: Caffeine has been shown to slightly reduce appetite. But drinking green tea daily could lead to about an inch off your waistline in 12 weeks, according to a recent American Journal of Clinical Nutrition review. That’s because EGCG and caffeine in green tea can help shrink fat cells and makes muscle cells more active.
    Best choice: Green Tea.'

No food item boosts your metabolism. You increase metabolism very, very slightly by increasing your lean body mass but otherwise it is what it is.

Dunno but it is beneficial to society due to the fact it decreases the odds of me killing people.

I find that a couple of cups of coffee in the morning helps curb my appetite so I don't overeat at my first break at work. Caffeine may not booste the metabolism, but it gives me a bit of an energy boost that usually gets me moving more. I do NOT work at a desk.
  • I don't have proof, but I think if you drank it black it would boost your metabolism. It makes your day go faster!

As long as it's black it can't hurt, and it will probably help.
Caffeine was/is in diet pills so it must have some effect =)

    Coffee is fine.

The real issue is the stuff you put in it or if you get the frou-frou coffee.

A regular cup of joe with a tiny bit of sugar and cream is A-Ok.

A grande full fat latte from Starbucks is not okay. (Maybe once in a while as a nice dessert, but nothing more).

I saw something out of the corner of my eye on TV about coffee in particular (not the caffeine especially) making it harder for women over 40 to keep their bellies down. They were also saying something about switching from wine to vodka drinks for the same reason. Don't know if there's anything to that.

I tried switching to yerba mate off coffee because it's supposed to be good for weight loss, and it did make me less jittery, but I missed coffee too much. Yerba mate is a nice alternative, though, when you can't have coffee.

Tea just bores my taste buds and gives me urps. Smells nice though.

And no, I don't put anything in my coffee--if I ever want a whipped-cream covered cupcake with sprinkles I'll get one of those and not pretend it's coffee..

Coffee is a mild stimulant and appetite suppressant.

This is from Men's Health and as such should be taken with a pinch of salt. Caffeine and green tea have been shown to increase thermogenesis but I am not sure where they would have got the 1 inch in 12 weeks from.
