Week 2 Slump - Already?!

Hi Guys, I really hope someone can give me a few tips here. I've only started my lifestyle change since Jan 1st but I already seem to be in a rut and I'm super frustrated.

I spent the first week dieting alone and lost 4-5lbs by the end of it. (Though I did have my period at the time and always gain weight during my TOM so I'm not sure if that was related to my period or because of the diet.)

I've been eating 100% clean, lean protein, lots of veggies, nuts and oats and trying to eat around 1250-1300 calories.

Week 2 I started working out and lets just say, I'm all or nothing.

I've gone from a very sedentary lifestyle to doing a daily workout of an hour- 1.5 hours consisting of 30 day shred, Pilates, Rowing Machine and Exercise Bike and I've been really enjoying it. I've been burning around 900 calories a pop. Is this too rigorous for the amount of calories i'm eating?

Week 2 has seen no change at all. Not even 0.1 of a pound. Needless to say its very frustrating because I've stuck to my diet 100% and worked out as hard as I possibly could. I know these things take a long time and I'm not expecting miracles overnight but I would have thought the scales would move a tiny bit at least. In the past when I have tried to lose weight I often lose a lot of water weight in the first two-three weeks but I'm just not budging on that scale!

Someone suggested that perhaps I jumped in too fast and it was so much of a lifestyle change that my body doesn't really know what to do with itself. Other people have said "Oh its probably because you are building muscle" but honestly, you don't gain muscle THAT fast do you? really?

The thing is I do actually feel like I've lost weight, or lost bloating at least already. I took my measurements a few days ago to keep a record of my weight loss that way too but its not been long enough to see any difference there.

I'm just generally confused and frustrated and was hoping for some advice. Do I just keep at it or am I doing something wrong?
Should I cut the workouts back to 3 times a week and build up or should I eat a bit more? A bit less?

I hope you can help.

Are you eating back those exercise calories? If not, that's your problem. Your body isn't getting enough fuel, it thinks you're starving, and it's trying to hang onto every ounce it can so you won't die.

With your new workout schedule, it could still be water weight as your muscles store more glycogen to compensate for your new level of activity.
  • Hi, Thanks so much for your reply!
Oops, No I haven't been eating back the exercise calories. Should I be eating them ALL back?
What do you suggest that I do, eat more of the calories back or slow down on the exercises and bring them up gradually?

    EAT.
  • Aha! Ok
And do I eat back ALL those calories?

Weight loss sometimes happens in spurts - you lost 4-5 pounds the first week, and nothing the second week. You're averaging over 2 lbs/week weight loss so far

Sorry, that's actually quite normal and still quite a fast rate of weight loss :)

But looking at your routine, you aren't really eating enough for how much activity you're doing. I would eat your calorie goal, plus probably at least half of your exercise calories, if not more. If you're enjoying your exercise routine, I would eat more. Definitely fuel your body

Losing 4-5 lbs the first week is phenomenal !! Give it two more weeks. I have found that if I lose 2 lbs in one week, then I don't lose any for 2-3 weeks. However, I'm a terrible 'weight loser' but keep with it and like the others said, eat back at least 1/2 your exercise calories.
  • Oh thank you so so much everyone! I thought I broke my metabolism LOL.
I'll eat more on the days I'm working out and see how that goes.

It took you a long time to get to the weight you are now (years?). I wouldn't be worried about breaking your metabolism over the course of a couple weeks :)

    Good luck!
