You give yourself a reasonable caloric deficit for your body. If you only have a few lbs to lose, you can't set your goal to lose 2 lbs a week and expect your body not to fight a 1000 calorie daily deficit.

Set your lifestyle factor truthfully (not many people are actually sedentary) and set your goal to lose 1/2 a pound per week. Then eat all your calories and your exercise calories the way MFP sets it up.

You won't feel deprived at all if you make reasonably good choices most of the time with a bit of junk thrown in for fun. There will be no need to binge.

Aside from some people with some psychological issues to deal with, most binging is caused by the hormones in our bodies telling us we're not getting enough nutrients.

Do you realize what you are doing or is this something that you do when distracted and see the aftermath (I had a friend would would do that)? If you notice you are getting into a binge, get away from whereever you are, take a walk, go listen to music, call someone that is a good support and then breathe a minute. Then go back and put everything away

I binged all the time before mfp.

When I am at home, I eat lots of frozen veggies (microwaved for 2 mins) as a base for my meals. Surprise, surprise, my cravings have stopped.

The more quick release energy carbs you eat, the more you will binge eat. This is because your body digests it too quickly as it is processed food and the carbohydrate chains are too small. It is like injecting glucose into your blood stream.

With every meal, try eating lots of veggies and then post a comment to feedback if your binging stopped.

I will try the frozen veggies! I have some currently that I need to eat and i love them!

When I binge, I know I am but I find it so hard to stop. It's like my whole body takes over and I can't control it :/
  • With your binging can you tell when it's about to happen, as in you pre-empt it? Or do you do it without realising?
Some days I can just feel a binge coming on, if I haven't been eating alot in a few days, and I'm feeling particularly deprived or just a bit down.

A bit of both! If i haven't eaten much, i know a binge would be coming but sometimes my whole body caries me to the food and i'm stuffing my face before i can even stop :/

^^ this is entirely it for me. If I set my calories too low, I will inevitably have a day where I feel like I just *have* to eat, and NOW!

if I set a reasonable deficit, I don't binge. I may want to eat more, but I won't feel like my body just takes over and stuffs my face.

Many days you are eating not only under 1000, but somedays under 800 calories.
What on earth do you expect to happen when you are essentially starving yourself?
You aren't binging, your body is trying to get enough food to sustain itself.
I suggest you start losing weight the sensible way, or set yourself up for a lifetime of binge eating and restriction that will destroy your health, and probably also affect various other aspects of your life.
  • Do you like popcorn? I eat that when im raiding the cupboards! massive bowl of salted popcorn lasts ages and doesnt break the bank when it comes to calories

Your diary tracks a few good days in there, but lots of those entries are really low. Maybe you didn't log everything, but I know when I go a few days not eating enough, I am suddenly face-to-face with overeating in a BAD way.

And hey! I am being very sensible! I keep my fluids up, I eat A LOT of fruit and veg! I know what I am doing! I have to stay healthy because I'm at university and I DO NOT want to mess that up! I am not stupid!

I checked your diary. There are many days you are under you calorie goal by quite a bit, or you don't log at all. Plus, I didn't see any binges if you are logging them. My advice is to set a more reasonable calorie goal, and eat more food during the day, so you aren't tempted to binge.

This! Although I also find certain foods trigger me. If you realize that is the case just don't eat those foods. For me it's sugar, high carb foods, and of all things, cashews. So hey, I get to eat a lot of steak, cheese, and whatever veggies I can force down (cause I never liked those much). Wah, poor me.

But definitely listen to this guy. If you create too big a deficit your body is going to react by creating excessive cravings.

Since you are planning to lose another 50lbs, I perceive you are trying to get to a weight WAYYYYY below what is healthy and normal.
So MFP advice is not supportive of such a goal!
It is normal to have days when you "feast", meaning you eat beyond your usual amount.
It is also normal to have days when you don't feel like eating as much.
But it is NOT normal to want to be 50lbs+ underweight.

You havent been bingeing. You've been consistently under eating and the last two days (if your diary is right) you FINALLY been somewhere near adequate consumption.

You don't need help not bingeing. You need to adjust your mindset and expectations.

Considering your binging days are my normal days I would say stop worrying about it and eat more real food.

Log everything..yes, even with binges. Make yourself accountable. As another poster said - your diary doesn't look all that great. 1200 probably is too low for you to start, but if you are consistently eating lower...that might mean your binging is your body telling you, "NEED FOOD".

If you want, check out this link by MFPer Heliotsdan - It'll give you a detailed walkthrough (with pictures even) on finding your TDEE and calculating what you should be eating.

Also, if you are worried about the calorie intake, I also suggest you read this thread that has numerous people who met their goals and are maintaining. Some for years and they also provide their calorie intake and how often they work out.

For those eating below their BMR (which I think 1200 is below your BMR to be honest), not going to preach at you, but here's something you might want to look at:

For the whole eating under a 1000 calories, look...you are going to do what you want but check out the link below at some of the stories of people who thought it was okay (especially because they weren't "feeling" hungry a lot of times) but ended up regretting it. These links are just information to give you options. I'm not preaching or trying to tell you or anyone what is the "right way"...just throwing some info your way is all.

Yes, this is can all be overwhelming and complicated , but you are more than welcome to ask questions on the post.
One of the things that I have found that has been one of the best methods for me to get fit is to understand fitness. To understand where all these figures, etc come from.

The good thing is once you get the hang of it - it is something you'll be aware of constantly and you'll get a better understanding about your eating habits.

So I HIGHLY suggest making the effort to take every chance to educate yourself. Even if you don't end up going with any of these methods, calculations, etc - at least you understand what they are, where others are coming from, and maybe they will still be able to help you figure out what is best for you.

My advice: start by eating breakfast each day. You need protein first thing in the morning to regulate your blood sugar and hunger. I looks like you usually skip breakfast and have Cheerios for lunch. I used to try something like Cheerios for breakfast, and as much as I like them, they didn't keep me full for long. I was starving again an hour later.

Also, I'd take the "binge" category off your diary. I know this is just psychological, but putting it on there is like you are giving yourself permission to binge. Use your diary to help you manage your eating. Most research suggests six meals a day. Keep all of them healthy.

Finally, it looks like you might have easy access to the treats you binge on. Remove them. Don't even let them in your home. Good luck.

    1) Remove the binge category in your diary. Seeing it every time you log food is like a subconscious prompt to go and eat naughty stuff.

    2) Your diary looks like you have set yourself up like a feast or famine approach. You have made some nice healthy choices there so now you need to eat every single allocated calorie each day. The MFP system sets you up with an automatic calorie deficit. If you selected lose 1lb weekly and MFP gives you 1200 calories per day to eat, then MFP has ALREADY taken 500 calories off your estimated number of calories you need to eat and not lose or gain. You do not need to under eat the 1200 calories at all - it is not helpful for your weightloss.

    3) You are hungry plain and simple. You have put your body through a mini 'famine' by undereating your energy needs and your body cries 'feast...feast now' to try to balance that. (think prehistoric man - he would gorge on his food because it could be days between meals...this is what you are kind of doing). If you regulate your calories a bit better (eat the entire 1200 every day) you will find the urge to fill up will diminish.

    4) Just remember, at this stage your body is just trying to find balance BUT if you continue to restrict too much and then overeat, it may go from little overeating sessions of 600-800 calories to much more serious true binge eating of 3000 to 5000 calories or more. Don't let yourself go there.
