Tuna? Yay or Nay?

I love tuna- I often put it on my salad (I dont add mayo- just chunk light canned tuna in water)
Any reason I shouldnt be eating it? Just curious. :)

Unless you're eating fresh, I've read that you should only eat 3 cans per week to keep mercury exposure down.

On average I probably have 2 cans of tuna a week.
I'm not concerned in the least by consuming that amount.

no reason why you shouldn't be eating it, good source of protein, I'd prefer raw tuna to canned tuna, can't eat it without adding mayo to it.

I eat it almost daily. And the canned chunk light in water kind. I'm also not dead yet, so I can't find any reason not to.

Tuna is what has got me through the last couple of weeks.

It's my "go to" protein source, spiced up a bit. Eaten daily.

Need a snack? Tuna. Want a sandwich? Tuna. Something on salad? Tuna.

Yeh, mercury, etc ... Look, I can see the arguments but it's keeping me full and I'm making decent progress so I'll take my chances.

Doubtless I'll be into eggs next week, I go through phases of favourite foods ...

Not understanding those referencing fresh vs canned in relation to mercury levels. Mercury is found in both, levels depend more on the type of tuna, not freshness. Larger tuna species contain higher levels (albacore, blue fin, etc). That said, I like and eat tuna. Just wouldn't recommend eating it every day. Canned salmon is a good alternative.

Some reports on tuna and mercury just because I had to look some things up because I found the fresh vs canned confusing since it's still tuna and the canning process doesn't add mercury.

  • If you want to keep hypertension at bay, watch your sodium count. Tuna is a great source of protein, but sometimes. in canned products, processed meats, etc. You're going to get high blood pressure from too much sodium. If you like it a lot, just watch the sodium in other foods. Or add "No salt" which is a salt substitute that is potassium, and potassium can kind of out weigh the effects of sodium.

Unless you are pregnant our about to become pregnant I feel a certain lack of concern over the mercury issue, unless you are eating the jumbo can size daily. I should probably pick some up. For a good long while my go to lunch was a can of tuna, a can of green beans, and a big dollop of mustard. Surprisingly yummy.

yeah, i'm not too concerned about the mercury levels. for a while i was eating a small can of flavored tuna a day. now i'm a little tired of it, but i'll go back to it at some point.

it's a good low calorie source of protein.

Tuna is a healthy source of protein. It's one of the few animal foods I'll eat on occasion.

Canned tuna is fine providing you are eating oily fish for other meals and generally getting a variety of different protein sources - it's not a particularly good source of haem iron, vitamin D nor long chain omega-3s.
