Insanity Inquiry

Greetings,

Here's some background about me:

33 year old female, 5'3"
I fall into the morbidly obese category
I have a sedentary desk job for 10hrs a day 4, days a week
I am not afraid to sweat during a workout.
In July I sprained my Right MCL in my knee (I slipped after a river float trip). I successfully completed physical therapy. (sometimes my knee aches.)
August of 2012-September of 2012 I participated in a 5K training group.
I ran the 5 K the end of Sep. 2012.

I am on the fence about Insanity. I would really like to buy it, but I'm not sure if it is for me. I have completed the 30DS in the past.

I am looking for some opinions about the 60 day Insanity workout program.

Many thanks!!

Christina

I'm a beachbody coach and I'll tell you honestly that Insanity is not for you yet. It is extremely tough and many people aren't able to do it. Even people who are in a healthy weight range complain sometimes about the impact the jumping has on their knees. With a knee injury I think it'd be better for you to hold off.

That's not to say to never do Insanity. My wife has had 3 knee surgeries and was able to do it, but she was prepared for it.

I agree with the above poster. If you're looking for a 60 - 90 day program from BeachBody there are several others that could help you build up to insanity - TurboJam, P90, or Slim in 6 might be good. If you're not looking for that sort of thing and were happy with Jillian in 30 DS maybe you could look into her Body Revolution program? I've seen that mentioned on these boards a lot (never done it though).

    :)
  • As an overweight, out-of-shape person I tried insanity. I managed to complete two days before hurting myself. I just wanted to see if I could complete one day. So I would not recommend it for you, at least at the moment. Have you tried Power 90? I like it because Tony shows the alternatives for people who can't do much jumping around (I have horrible knees) where as Jillian doesn't.
  • Hi there! Also looking to start Insanity in the next week or so... I'm curious, how are you guys logging Insanity into the exercise calculator on here? Doesn't seem MFP has Insanity in its catalog.

Well it's a couple of things.... When you are out of shape in any program you modify to make it still a workout but wher you will not hurt yourself. I have seen plenty of those who classify as morbidly obese succeed with insanity, go through the beachbody forums and have a look for yourself. If you go that route the rule of thumb is push yourself but not past what's realistic, keep proper form and take breaks/rest as you need hydrate as you go and modify modify modify. Jumping jacks can be modified, even power jumps can be modified as just regular jumping during that segment. Invest in GOOD shoes. Get on the teambeachbody insanity forum boards and ask some questions from others who have been through the program and started out in the same shape as you and ask how they got thru it. The thing about insanity is don't expect to be able to keep up, even some of the people in the video take frequent breaks to grab water/catch their breath or stop when they feel their form failing, you do your best while keeping your form.
