Good Morning all,
I just saw a topic posted anda lot of followup after about having a "bad" day eating over, way over, etc the calorie goal at some point of the weekend. And I am seriously thinking that I need my head examined. please feel free to kick me in the *kitten*, but preferably without malice (lol)

Ok, So when I read these things I thought- ok, well stuff happens. I mean this is life, birthdays, celebrations, heck- once in a while cravings. I really don't see an issue with having a day here and there. , think I need to be aware of my choices, log it, acknowledge That it may slow down progress slightly for the week (depending on my choices) but is it really a reason to feel bad? l mean even if I decided to only change my lifestyle 5 out of 7 days (l'm not) That would still be a vast improvement tho, wouldn't it? I am not trying to justify a snake excuses,.. l am just trying to understand and be realistic, this isn't a diet for me to go on and off. This is my life and I am trying to see "Diet" as a noun, not a verb.

Ok, I'm a little scared, but... thoughts?

I agree, but I also don't splurge very often, which obviously makes me shrug my shoulders more than someone who often finds any excuse to go over.

Last year I was the person who worked out like crazy, and ate pretty healthy during the week. But on the the weekend I would indulge too much and I didn't loose a pound...(I get up at 5 to go to the gym) I got very discouraged and fell off the workout wagon. I gained 7 pounds. But at the beginning of January i found this wesite, started working out again and have been religously using my food diary. And I have already lost 4 pounds! Moral of the story - Weekend binging has been my demise in the past. Now I log the things I am going to want to eat to see how much I can have while still staying under my calorie goals. Good luck!

When I have a bad day, I think it's really bad, then I'll log it and find its really not as bad as I thought. One day I was beating my self up, and it turned out I was only 100 calories over for the day. Lol. Christmas this year was probably my worst splurge ever. But, I just get back to it the next day.

if it happens once in a while its fine, like holidays are nothing to stress out over. If you have planned 'cheat' or refeed days worked in to your overall goal, that's fine too. Your metabolism does not have a 24 hr clock and lots of people balance their calories out on a weekly basis to allow for their lifestyles. If you have a very restrictive diet that causes you to have overwhelming cravings and binge eat, beyond what you plan for yourself, there's a problem. If you can't allow yourself to have any flexibility without losing complete control, something is foundationally wrong. Additionally, when that happens, people tend to lose sight of nutrition, so then a large portion of your weekly calories end up coming from whatever you binge ate- which tends not to lead to a well rounded diet.

People who have planned cheat days do not tend to end up with the restrict/binge mindset. If they do get to that point, that diet structure is probably not best suited for their personality.

This usually turns out to be the case for me. On occasion it reaches 200 over. Only once has it gotten to 1,000 over. Holidays and special occasions are, of course, mostly free-for-alls. But otherwise, it's usually not anywhere near as bad as I feared.

I've been 'splurging' allot lately. It gives me more energy to jump around :drinker:

Ok, good to hear there are others that look at this the same way. I mean don't get me wrong, if I down a big mac meal with a chocolate cake and keg o'beer chaser i would bug out!! And while i am focused on weight loss, the off days need to be managed, but not omitted, for me anyway, but I think if i was a trigger eater or binged- i would have to approach it differently

Ok so it's not ideal but there are times when there's no point in self denial. I honestly believe easy on easy off. It's the same with easy off though :(

Been there!! I just hate feeling that way. I'm Italian and so much of my best memories and times with family and friends is around food, cooking, eating - the whole bit. I want to live in harmony, not beat myself half to death over a plate of pasta once in a while. I guess its just harder when you have a goal you're trying to reach- i feel like every choice helps or jeopardizes my goal.... just so much stress over sustinence. Lol

I think you have a healthy attitude, just be honest with logging your food. If you never eat anything, or enjoy family occasions you will end up as a bore and eventually fall off the wagon. A little of what you want is good, just try and plan ahad. Good luck

Another of my MFP friends sort of asked the same kind of idea as a comment on her wall - and here's the reply I gave her. I think this fits and would help here too :)

I perfer to allow myself a what I call "casual day" - as oppose to "off day" or "bad day" lol.

Off day, or bad day to me, would allow me to go buck wild lol.

But on a "casual day" - if someone wants to order pizza for dinner I go with the flow - but I just have less than I have for my entire 30 years of life so far lol.

Same idea for exercise. Even if you normally have hit 1 hour cardio goals for the past 7 days (you go cardio queen lol) - if you have a "casual day" even if it's walking 1 block (and say takes only 10min to do that) - that's 10min more than nixing exercising altogether if you allowed a "bad day" or an "off day"

Wow my 'bad' day is when I'm 10 cals over..... it's not happened more than once or twice in the whole year I been here. I guess I've become used to what I can have & know just on sight if it's ok or not. I've had whole pizza (large one with the lot) to myself & STILL been under calorie for the day.

NO bad days at all for me.

I really like this way of putting. A casual day, used with some effort, even if it's not full force. Very nice!
