Has anyone ever used gum or hard candies to stop snacking? What was your experience with it?

I chew a pack of gum every couple of days. If satisfies my need to munch on something and the strong flavors don't combine well with sweets. Like orange juice and tooth paste don't taste good together.0

I tried sugar free candy but got through a few boxes and ended up in agony the next day, not to mention I got through rather a lot of toilet paper. Gum just makes me hungrier. Seems to stimulate the appetite in me.0

Yes to both. Didn't work. I'm actually snacking more now than ever before because I'm dividing my calories differently. I have my three main meals and they're smaller than before, and I have some well chosen snacks. My favorites are cutie oranges, almonds and an occasional 50 calorie square of dark chocolate. It is all about portion control and staying just a little under your calorie goal. I also eat back some of my exercise calories but not all of them. I'm making progress. It isn't fast progress, but I think it will be permanent progress. Good luck to you.0

Werthers Original Sugar Free hard candies do the trick for me. I read on another thread that the soft Russel Stover that comes in a box is made of a laxative. So now I make it a rule to only have sugar free hard candies.0

I tried it, but it didn't work. It just made me hungrier
That's just personally, it would be worth a shot to try0 -
Well, my problem isn't really that I am a "snacker," but I am a binge eater. I have started the habit of night time eating and I want to replace it with either gum or hard candies and a hobby at night. I think I may try gum first and see how it goes.0

hard candies will rot your teeth!
sugar free candies have sugar alcohol in them and eating too many causes a laxative effect.
you can try gum.
only keep small servings of stuff in easy reach and keep the larger things in inaccessible places.0 -
I chew gum. A new piece every two hours(after my breaks and lunch) I go thru alot of gum packs, especially if i leave the pack in my work pants and it goes thru the wash.:mad:0

hot tea, coffee, decaff when needed. Works good, back up plan, go brush your teeth, no one wants to eat right after cause your tastebuds are shot.0

You got it right when you said HABIT! Now that you're aware of what the problem is you can work on it but I don't think candy is the answer. Set yourself a night time snack with a limit. If need be prepare it earlier and then you supply the willpower to only have that snack and no more. There's no big tricks to it, it comes down to determination and developing new habits.0 -
I do gum...and lots and lots of water.
Most days.
Except today.

I chew gum....some that the flavor lasts a long time....as long as I am chewing gum other food isn't going in my mouth! plus the chewing has to burn some calories....right?0

I also recommend drinking ALOT it water. Try crystal light and those type of flavor packets to add different tastes to the water so its not just plain old water. Gum is ok, but I'm not for hard candy. I used to eat them thinking it was a good alternative but they have (1) sugar alcohols which can cause a laxative effect, (2) more calories than I though a stupid piece of candy should have and (3) quite a lot of carbs again for a stupid little piece of candy. If you have one or two its not a problem but I found I could go through a bag of hard candy in a day or two, and after adding the calories and carbs found it wasnt worth it.
If your hungry perhaps try breaking up your eating to eat more often and have a few small meals each day or include snacks into your daily eating and and make sure that you get a lot of protein and fiber, that will keep you full.0
