I know I need to take supplements while I am on a low calorie diet. But does it matter what brands? It seems like the supplements at Walgreens are a lot cheaper than at the nutrition stores.
Do you get what you pay for??:ohwell:

I take a Calcium/Magnesium and Vit D supplement and on days when my potassium is low I also add a Potassium supplement.(I tend to have low Potassium levels)

What supplements help with weightloss, muscle development, and protect your bones and immune system?

Thank you for any help, I am trying to go about this in a healthy way. Lifestyle changes that have purpose!!

You don't need to take supplements while on a low cal diet. As long as you are eating healthy and very well balanced there is no need to take anything.
I take a multi with extra B vitamins but that's because I'm a vegetarian and b-12 isn't easy to come by with a veg lifestyle. I also take a protein supplement when I am going to work out for more than an hour.
If you feel the need to take something and multi vitamin should be all you truly need (ask a doctor before you start taking anything just in case it would interfere with anything you already take or may need to take).
As for brands I use Vega protein powder or Isopure protein by Natures Best. Vitamins I usually take Solaray Spectro for vegetarians.

Everyone should always take Vitamin C - it's water-soluble so you pee out anything your body doesn't need - and some kind of natural antibiotic (acidolphilus, garlic, fish oil, etc.). I take Vitamin D, Vitamin C & Cod Liver Oil for my skin.

I take a P90X packet of vitamins everyday along with my iron pill. I think it just depends on the person and what your body is lacking.

I think vitimins are necessary when or when you are not dieting; I know a woman of my "advanced" age needs to take Vitimin D, along with a whole slew of others things that my body does not want to produce enough of any more!!!!! Everyone is different, and out bodies need different things.

To be hones wtih you, I don't think there is a difference on where you purchase your vitimins - I myself think that they are all the same; just packaged a bit different.

  • I think its best to have a blood workup to see if you are lacking anything. I don't think all vitamins are created equal. I used to see a vitamin pharmacologist. He said its not the cost that makes them better, but the ingredients. Some cheap brands are good some expensive brands are bad. I think its best to buy supplements at a healthfood store and I'm not talking about a place like GNC. Whole Foods has a decent selection, so does Better Health Market. Or try a holistic practitioner or chiropractor. They usually have some pretty good brands.

I agree with the Maid....Low cal doesn't mean you need a supplement. Its only calories you should be cutting, not nutrition. So as long as you are eating whole foods on your diet, you should be able to get enough nutrition. If you are cutting out a food group, then maybe you should consider a supp if you can't replace that nutrition with another food. I'm veggie too, so I need to make sure I get B12 and Vit D. Otherwise, I don't have any probs getting the correct balance of nutrition. Food is the best medicine and supplement nature can provide.
