Dear MFP people,
I have so far lost over 3 stone and I am happy (ish) with my weight now and my fitness level is the best it has ever been. I really need to tone up my lower body i.e. stomach and abdomen. Any suggested exercises that anyone can tell me, I go to the gym 2-3 times per week and do 60 mins of cardio and then spend 30-45 mins doind other stuff like free weights, squats and lunges etc but it doesn't seem to be having much effect, I just need to target that area a bit more.

All suggestions welcomed.

    Straight off before anyone says it;

You can't localize fat loss, therefore if you do 1000 crunches it won't remove the fat in that particular area, you seem to have it more or less down exercise wise and the fat will go eventually, everyone has their 'problem area' and the stomach is most peoples.

Oh and GREAT JOB on the 3 stone loss, you are doing great :D

It might be that you have hit your Plataea, i had a quick look at your diary and your macros seems like the default of MFP, i would calculate your BMR and TDEE and work out your Fat/Protein minimums and then make up the rest of calories with Carbs.

Also, drink MORE WATER! (unless you just forget to log it) Water is very important in making our bodies run so drinking sufficient water will also aid in the weight loss.

Just keep working hard and you will soon see the results.

I don't really want to fat loss in that area as i'm happy weight wise, just want to tone the muscles so it looks better. I have looked at BMR and TDEE but got totally lost, but I will try again. Happy to stay this weight but the muscles are a bit flabby after 2 kids and being overweight for 10 years.
  • Hi Kellster,

What i recommend is eating cleaner calories.
    A. Look up paleolithic diet). http://www.thefoodee.com/ for recipees.

    B. Doing High intensity exercises/circuit training with Weights. If you have a Crossfit Gym close by i recommend joining that.

Hope it all works out for you. All the best

Lie on your back on the floor, and hold on to something stable above your head--like a table leg or bed post. Bring your legs up ninety degrees, with your toes point to the ceiling. Lower your legs slowly until your feet are almost touching the floor, then slowly bring your legs back up to the starting position. I like to do this while listening to music, and lower my legs for four beats, hold for four beats, then raise them for four beats. This has done wonders for my abs. I do three sets of 12, 2 or 3 times a week. I guess you could work up to strapping some weights on your legs or holding for 8 beats--but I am not there yet.

If you are at the gym, you could do abs on the incline bench, where your head is down and your knees up. I like to hold a 10 pound weight against my chest for these. There should be a place to hook your legs, and just raise your upper body to a seated position, then lower. I quit the gym when I decided I could get just as good of a work out at home, but I used to do like 3 sets of 20 for these.

Also, the traditional bicycle crunch. Lie on your back with your knees bent and your hands behind your head. Lift your upper body off the floor and turn your upper body so that you bring your right elbow to your left knee, while extending straight out a few inches off the floor. Then switch, bringing your left elbow to your right knee and extending your left leg. I do three sets of 20, 2 or 3 times a week.

And the bridge, which also targets your bum and other core muscles. Lie on your back with your knees bent and raise your hips toward the ceiling. Hold for a count of four or eight, then lower your hips back to the floor. I like to do these while resting a weight on my hips. 3 sets of 12.

I find doing slow, deliberate ab work with excellent form and lower repetition much more beneficial than doing a whole bunch of crappy ab work really fast. So make sure that you are using proper form, and google it if you need to.

Some other things that target your abs that you might not think of include jabbing left, right, left, right across your body, making sure you are really twisting your torso and tightening your abs. Front kicks or marching too.

    Happy ab work!

Weights, heavy weights. Look at the book, New Rules of Lifting for Women.'
I just started it and boy, my stomach is already shrinking, and this is with upping my calories too. The core muscles are so much firmer, it feels awesome to see that belly going down! Everything is firmer and although I haven't lost any weight since starting lifting, I can feel my fat getting thinner! I have a long way to go but now I know, after years of carrying a slack belly around, I can see the light at the end of the tunnel.
    Seriously - lift heavy!

    oooooooooo tonage!

Sorry i missed that, it was early and i was sleepy!

Just follow the advice people are giving you here, make sure to work your deep core muscles and your core muscles and the abs will tone up in time.

There are plenty of ab exercises you can do for this.

You are confused. Muscles are never flabby. The flabby stuff is fat. You should stop thinking of your goal in terms of weight and instead go with appearance and body fat percentage.
