Yoga and calories burned?

Do any of you measure your calorie expenditure with a HRM or any other device during a Yoga session?

So far I have been using MFPs estimated calories when I log my exercise, it estimates 145 cal per 60 minutes and that just cannot be right :-) I do Yoga every day and some days are hardcore Vinyasa or Power and it gives me 200 cal for 80 minutes.

I guess it is better to log less calories than more, but still, I am curious :-)

When I check online for possible answers this is what I get:

Hatha - 60 min - 175
Ashtanga - 60 min - 300
Power - same as Ashtanga
Vinyasa - 60 min - 445
Bikram - 60 min - over 600

Thoughts?

I know when I run for 60 minutes, it's roughly 600 calories burned (by my HRM). When I do yoga for 60 mins, while it feels good and can be strength training, it is just not going to burn near that many calories. I always use MFP for that and assume the 170ish calories they give me is about right (if not overestimated a bit). I'm planning to go to a "fitness pilates" class at the gym on Wednesday. I'll wear my HRM and report back!;)

When I did Vinyasa last week I kept it on for the majority of the session, and 40 minutes got me about 330 calories burned. I'm 5'3 at around 135lbs.

I paused it for a total of 20 minutes in between flows, though.
  • I would think that in a power class it would burn just as many calories as running (though I was more of a jogger at 5-6 mph than a runner). Those are very strenuous and I exert as much effort, if not more, than in a bikram class.

Than you ladies for your input!

I will try to figure out if my old IronMan Triathlon HRM/watch can measure calories burned for me, if not, I guess it's time to upgrade to a new HRM :-)
