New Member! 5'8" female 24 years old :)

Excited to be joining the community! I welcome any motivational friends, but would love to be friends with some women with a *similar* body type (on the taller side, medium to large bone structure, hoping to lose about 25 to 30 pounds.) For the first time in my life I am taking this whole weight loss thing seriously instead of just feeling sorry for myself. I am running a half marathon in March and I'm two and a half weeks into my training schedule (running five times per week, four times around 3-5 miles each with a long run every Sat increasing by one mile per week) but have actually GAINED weight (at 168 now). I need to instill good eating habits in myself and learn to avoid stress eating, which is tough because I'm in my second year of law school. I am committed to this half marathon, and I want to cross that finish line 15 pounds lighter than I am right now (race day is ten weeks away so I think this is a bold but attainable goal!) I'm already loving the MFP community and finding the message boards so inspiring. Good luck to everyone! You are all inspiring!

Hi there :) Feel free to add me, I love having positive friends for mutual motivation and support!
  • Hi there, I'm your same age and similar height. I'm at 135 now, but I at my most weighed 178 pounds. I consider myself to be in ok shape but I do need work. I've relied on a few principles to help me lose weight and stay positive:

for immediate weight loss, protein being > carbs is great. But really, it's about reliability. Feed your body the same foods, in other words make a SOUP to eat throughout the week. SOUP is the name of the game. Chop up some chicken or beef, add plenty of vegetables (yes even frozen) and maybe some brown rice. you'll be at roughly 300 calories a serving and your body will get used to digesting this healthy food. Plus soup also includes a lot of water.

If you've been sprinting a lot then you need to drink A LOT of water. A spinning instructor informed me that you need an OZ of water for every minute worth of sprinting. Oh yeah, find an exercise habit that you like, if running works for you then great. I do spinning, because I'm impatient and like the fact that I burn 700 calories in an hour!!!! plus its fun!

I also like to set a food date with my boyfriend, like how I'm looking forward to the bacon burger on Valentine's day. It keeps me happy with eating healthy food knowing that unhealthy food should be a rare gift that you can treat yourself with.

People gain weight when they gain muscle, but I also suggest some light weight lifting with 5-10 pound barbells or medicine balls to help keep muscle growth to a maximum. Studies show when you do cardio exercise along with dieting you can actually lose muscle, rather than doing weight lifting and cardio as compliments to one another.

Good luck, get a tape measure and a cute dress in a couple of sizes smaller than you are now. Hang it up somewhere where you can look at it and be reminded of the body you want to have and the healthy person that you want to be. I wish you the best of luck!!!

I am a very new member to MFP. I am 24 years old and currently weigh 159lbs and started MFP at 161. The biggest I have ever been, besides when I was pregnant, was 164 pounds. I am 5' 7" and my goal is to reach 130 pounds. I am also finally taking this seriously and working at this weight loss thing everyday.
