Now that the new year has arrived and I can get reimbursed for fitness-related expenses, it is time to buy a new pair of shoes and some more appropriate workout clothes. My current shoes are 15+ year old New Balance cross-trainers that have seen much better days. Workout gear is a pair of cheap synthetic shorts and a old cotton t-shirt.

I need something for the gym, where I do a mix of weight training (free weights + machines), cardio (treadmill/bike/elliptical), and bag work (MMA-style striking/kicking on a heavy bag). I don't intend to use the shoes outside of the gym; if I decide to take up running outside on a regular basis, I will get a pair of running shoes. When I start playing soccer again, I've got the right boots for both indoor and outdoor play, so I'm set there.

Budget is $100 to $120, but if there is a killer pair of shoes that you are in love with, don't let that price range deter you from making a recommendation.

As for the clothes, I'm thinking I might want to get some synthetic tops that will wick sweat better, dry faster, and fit better (I'm down 50 pounds, so my old t-shirts are big on me ). What are your favorite stores or online shops for workout gear?

Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

If you're planning on running (even on a treadmill) go get properly fitted for shoes at a running store. Your legs/back/feet/sanity will thank you.

I just got a pair of Brooks running shoes on sail for about $65 (and I now buy inserts for my flat feet, so another $20). I cannot tell you how much better I feel after getting some nicer gear; I no longer get shin splints. For tops I really like the ones in the actual sporting sections (synthetic ?? absolutely no cotton shirts anymore for me). I even found socks that are made for sports lifestyles that are more breathable.

i like new balance 4mm drop minimus trail running shoes. perfect for running outdoors and on trails, or on the treadmill. a nice low drop heel so you can lift properly (squats and dead lifts), and it has arch support so you are not fully flat footed.

my first pair lasted a year and got me through four mud runs including tough mudder. they are still good, but i retired them in honor after TM.

If you don't have them, I'd add a HRM and one of the pedometers you can sync to MFP to your list. My doctor got very upset with me for underestimating my calorie burn during exercise - and by the HRM, she was right.
