50 pounds in 3 months??

Hey everyone,

So I currently weigh 165 and I am trying to get down to 115. I am 5'3. I weighed 115 when I was 18 and I am now 21. I've have been trying to lose the weight for a while now and now I am desperate!! I am cursed with a very slow metabolism. Any advice would be great!!

What is your BMR? What is your TDEE?

At your height and weight, 50 pounds in 3 months is nearly impossible. If it occurs, it will most likely be the result of massive health problems.

Just out of curiosity why do you need to lose it all in 3 months?

Burn calories through exercise and take in less calories than you need to maintain your weight and you will lose weight. calculate your TDEE and go lower than that. Add exercise, and watch the pounds melt!
Do not go lower than 1200 calories, that is considered to be an eating disorder. Oh and drink a ton of water!

You are setting yourself up for failure. Be more realistic with your goal. 12 lbs in 3 months sounds completely doable, and healthy.

50 pounds in 3 months is really unhealthy and most likely will not stay off. A healthy loss would be 20-25 pounds in that time. 1.5-2 pounds a week is healthy and consistent. It is a lifestyle change and it takes time to form those habits for consistency. A healthy pace to lose 50 pounds would be approximately 6 months or so.
  • I am trying to lose the weight in approx. three months, because I have a trip coming up in June. I know this is 4 months away, but I want to be able to do lots of shopping before the trip!! I am not sure what a TDEE is?!? But my REE is 1300 and I believe my BMR 28 or 29.

I think you have set an unrealistic expectation because you already said you have a "slow" metabolism. Why don't you make a goal to see how much you can lose in the next year? Oh well, you won't look the way you want in June... but you'll look better than you do now regardless!

50 pounds in 3 months? And you want it to stay off for good? That's not going to happen in any healthy manner. Max you can expect is 2 pounds per week. Anything more than that I'd bet good money it won't stay off for life. It's a marathon not a sprint.

PS I thought I had a slow metabolism too. Turns out I just had no clue what I was eating.

I believe you mean your BMR is 1300 and your BMI is 28 or 29. At sedentary, your TDEE is about 1560. That means through diet alone, you could manage a 250 deficit for half a pound a week of weight loss. Which would be 6 pounds in 3 months.

If you run for 3.5 to 4.0 hours a day at about 5 or 6 mph, EVERY day, you may be able to reach your goal mathematically speaking... but physiologically speaking, losing weight at such a rate would cause your body to basically FREAK OUT and stop you dead in your tracks.

Sorry to say, but you should aim to lose 0.5 to 1.0 pounds a week.

There is NO way you'll be losing 1/3 of your body weight in 3 months unless you amputate both your legs from the hip down.

    No.
I was a lot heavier than you when I started (238) and it has taken me over a year to drop 51lbs.
Stop setting yourself time-based goals, if you fail you will be disappointed and likely give up. This is a marathon not a sprint.

I don't even know what to say to those numbers except I dont think a BMR can be that low.... but regardless if you are asking what a TDEE is you need to read this.............> http://www.myfitnesspal.com/topics/show/654536-in-place-of-a-road-map-2-0-revised-7-2-12

I started at close to your weight, I'm about your height, and I ended up at close to your final goal. It took me 11 months. It has stayed off for three years. Do it right--slow and easy. You'll relearn all your health habits in the process. Be patient. You'll be glad in the long run.

Even if you only wanted to lose weight for your trip and didn't care about gaining it all back afterward, I am fairly confident you would be in a hospital well before June and then your trip would be canceled anyway.

I am the same height, started at around the same weight, and have about the same goal. It took me an entire year to get to 30 lbs lost. Don't rush it. Do it the right way. You might not lose everything you want by June, but you'll be 4 months closer to your goal.

I came here hoping for the same thing two years ago, to be honest... I "needed" a "quick way" to lose weight for upcoming events....

After finding some amazing people on this wonderful site I learned A LOT from them and through my own trial and error.

Please. Please. Please don't do it to your body.... you are 21 years old. You could do some major damage internally and externally.

Did you gain the 50lbs in 3 months? No, you didn’t.

Would you rather drop the weight quickly with some fad diet and gain it ALL (and MORE) back? No, you wouldn’t. (and trust me you will....)

Would you rather lose 5-10 pounds per month and look and feel better about yourself than you currently do now? Yes, you should (hopefully this is would)

MFP is set up so you can lose weight in a HEALTHY way. Any "3 day diets" or "7 day diet" or "super cleanse" will NOT work.... trust me... I've tried.

Watch what you eat, eat correct portions, eat the right things, and drink water. Want even better results... workout. Thats it.

Good luck in not choosing a fad diet program and using MFP what its made for

With regular weight lifting and other exercises, you might look so good in 3 months that you feel like you lost 50 pounds. That is do-able.
  • The only time I ever lost 50 pounds in 3 months was right after a pregnancy, and that was mostly water weight. But it did happen. I worked me tail feathers off every day and blasted through some pretty stubborn plateaus, I pushed myself to near injury :(

I just lost 50 pounds in under 3 months. I also started out weighing more than twice as much as you did, 354. I needed to shed the weight of an entire adult person. At your weight, there's no way you should lose that fast and do it in a healthy way. As for me, I fully expect to slow down considerably at some point in my next 50 pounds.

4 mos is roughly 16 weeks.

If you aren't into cleanses, I wonder if you could do a plan where you lose 10 lbs in 10 days by just being as clean as possible and doing loads of cardio. This is doable for your first 10 days and not unhealthy, bc people have a lot of excess carb grams and water in their system. There are a lot of healthy ones like the grapefruit diet. There is NOTHING wrong with doing this diet. You can eat enough calories, (it used to be low calorie, but it has been modified in the past year. Google it). It's something like 2 grapefruits (cut into halves - half each meal). And then lean protein like chicken and fish along with unlimited greens. Lots of water, 2 eggs and 2 pieces of nasty bacon. This won't hurt you at all. Read reviews, ppl are losing so much weight from it. My mom's friend is 64 and she had to lose weight for a contest where you can win a cruise. She competed w/ppl of all ages and she won by doing the grapefruit diet along with 30 day shred and some other exercises.

If you lose ten lbs the first two weeks you would have 14 weeks left. If you were PERFECT with your eating and working out during those 14 weeks and lost 2 lbs a week, that would be 28 lbs added to your 10 lbs. You'd be only 12 lbs away from goal. It's not exactly what you want, but that isn't bad at all considering. And although hard, I don't think it is dangerous.

I don't even know if that is possible, but just sort of thinking off the top of my head.

Naw, that is not necessary, that would be too hard. Clean eating and extra cardio should be enough. Thanks for being pessimistic though. The half empty glasses are on the table in another room, you can go back there now.

50 lbs / 90 days requires a loss of 0.55 lb per day

To lose 1lb you need a deficit of 3500 calories.

To lose 0.55 lb you would then need (3500*0.55) = 1925 cal deficit every day.

    This of course isn't possible.

If you have 12 weeks and really focus you could lose up to 18 lbs safely, but aim for 12 lbs as a goal.

OP, I agree with the other posters that you shouldn't set a time based goal, and that you should aim to lose max 2 pounds a week. Even if you lose 5 pounds the first week, it is not a weight loss that can be replicated. That being said, if you lose 1.5-2 pounds a week, you will have lost 22.5-30 pounds at the end of three months. If you aim to keep fit while losing, that is actually a great goal and could get you where you want to be, measurement and looks-wise.
    Wish you luck!
