Tom Venuto and Lyle McDonald are great resources. You can't go wrong learning from everything they write. Their websites are great resources as well.

It's a good read but I would take a lot of his stuff with a grain of salt.

    ^^agreed.

His suggestions/recommendations are not bad, they just are not all necessary imo

I have always thought that Tom Venuto provided good information. He dispels a lot of the bad or outdated information as a lot people I trust on this site. I can't get with everything he says (eating 6 meals a day, etc) but generally he's a good reference.
  • any other recommendations for a fairly newbie like me to keep getting educated?

Lyle McDonald's Guide to Flexible Dieting.
  • I don't eat six meals a day, but I do eat every three hours. When you work out and are trying to loose weight/build muscle, you need to feed your muscles or they feed on themselves. Not eating properly can send your body into starvation mode. Also, you can avoid the "I didn't eat anything all day and now I am going to eat everythig" senerio. Another reason to eat often is it keeps your blood sugar/insuslin from spiking and fluctuating.

I think it's a great read and he puts out solid information.

I don't agree with everything he says but then again there's not a single writer I universally agree with.

Another good read is Anthony Colpo's "The Fat Loss Bible". Lots of people find him abrasive but he cracks me up.

There is no need to eat every 2-3 hrs to prevent muscle catabolism. Your eating pattern should be based upon whatever helps with your own compliance. If eating frequently helps, great. If eating one or two large meals a day helps, also great. But don't base meal frequency on the misguided belief that your muscles will waste away after 4 hrs without a meal.

One issue with too many meals on a calorie deficit is each meal seems little more than a light snack, which may hurt your compliance.

Lyle McDonald and Martin Berkhan have written extensively on this topic. Check out the articles on their sites (or you can probably find a few topics in various MFP threads).

That being said, I still endorse most things Venuto and McDonald have to say.

To be fair to Tom Venuto I don't think his line is that you must eat multiple times a day just that if you can and it fits your preferences then that is optimal.

I haven't read the research for some time but IIRC there is a slight (and I mean slight) advantage of nibbling over gorging diets in terms of TEF*

*I reserve the right to change my mind if there is newer, more compelling research to the contrary ;)

The benefit of multiple meals for me is that it keeps me in check in regards to not pigging out after skipping a meal or even a snack. I agree that starvation mode is both misunderstood and over-hyped. There is a group in here dedicated to short periods of fasting and back it up with before/after pictures. Just for me - I tend to follow a period of not eating with a breakdown of discipline. To each there own.
