When should I have my protein shake?

I'm really new to this whole protein powder thing but I figured since I'm not a huge meat eater and want to also gain some muscle I should incorporate protein powder into my diet. Right now I have it only on the days I work out and either before or after the gym. I was wondering if that is a good plan and if it be better to have before or after? Or should it be for breakfast? Before bed? I have no idea and would like some advice on when the best time of day to drink it would be for me, thanks!

Protein powder is not really a substitute for meat many are not that nutritious unless fortified, it's fine not to eat meat but instead consume more fish and seafood, dairy and whole eggs for the vitamins, minerals and essential fatty acids they supply. IMO the vest use of protein powders is as they were intended - a supplement or convenience food not daily meal or food replacement. They are good for either before or after the gym if it is not possible to eat real food or added to a fruit smoothie, only serious bodybuilders 'need' it at any other time of day.0

I drink mine as a mid morning snack every day. I also drink one after working out.0

Protein powder can be used in many recipes to 'boost' the amount of protein you get. Think outside of the shaker. The best one is vanilla protein powder as you can add it to pancake mix, muffins, your morning oatmeal, breads, etc. to increase the protein of any food. If you aren't a big meat eater, you may want to try other sources such as low-fat/fat-free cottage cheese, quinoa, beans, and other protein-rich foods.0
