Advice from those who workout at home

Hello to all. So- i walk every single morning fast paced (some times jogging for about 10 min of the walk) for about 20-25 mintues (a lap around a lake in my neighborhood). Ive been told that if i just keep it up i'll be sure to burn these calories. However, i cant help but feeling like i should be doing more----i really want to do more. I was in TJ Maxx today (my substitution for eating wrong foods lol) and i saw these weights....2.5lbs each...i wanted to purchase them but i thought to myself....do these things really help??? i dont know- it just seems like you wont really see results until years later. so i just wanted some advice from women that actually do a little weight exercising at home. Any pointers on maybe some workouts that i can do at home (that wont take years for results to show up). Are the dumbbells really helpful???

Also i have a 10 month old that i'm home with so the gym is out of the picture...i have to fit him into my schedule with whatever i do....or something that is short enough that i can squeeze into his nap sessions.

Thanks in advance for the help

Try some workout videos. If you like walking, try Leslie Sansone. She has dozens of videos for people who like to walk/jog, and you might be surprised at how many more calories you can burn in front of the TV when you have some crazy energetic person right there encouraging you to pick up the pace. She also does a few moves here and there to change it up- things like side steps and knee lifts that any completely uncoordinated person can keep up with.

Weights are a good idea in general. If all you are doing is walking, you might want to use some light weights to tone up your arms a bit, and throw in some crunches for a stronger core.

    Good luck!

What are your goals? If you want to build strength 2.5lb weights aren't going to do a lot. If money is an issue you'd be better investing in some good resistance bands and perhaps a pull-up bar. These combined with bodyweight exercises can give you a full body workout.

There are plenty of fitness videos online for free. Try fitnessblender.com for some ideas.

There's so many at home options. HIIT workouts (high intensity interval training) are great workouts, and range from 15 to 30 minutes. Checkout fitness blender on youtube, they have alot of great workouts. I've also joined a 30 day challenge that I do from home as well, here's the link, http://www.mrshutupandtrain.com/30daycc/. Adding weight to your workout regimen is always going to be beneficial. Start small, like your 2.5lbs, and as those get too light, just increase the weight. Hope this helps :)

Weights are definitely a good idea, but not 2.5 lb ones. In order for weights to effectively build muscle, they have to be a weight that you will struggle a bit with - definitely more than 2 lbs. I know you can get adjustable weights at target if you don't want to commit to a whole set - they go up to at least 25 lbs. Good luck!

Leslie Sansone's dvds are great. It's amazing how fast it goes and you don't need a lot of space. The Walk/Jog dvd equals a 2.5 mile exercise and it only takes 30 minutes start to finish.

    Good luck!

I mainly run and do workout DVDs at home! The 30 day shred really changed my body and elevated my strength levels, even with light weights... I just wasn't used to even my own body weight!
  • I agree with the Leslie Sansone workouts. I enjoy the 5 mile one with the band. It takes an hour to do, but I burn 912 calories in that hour. It is a good fast pace workout. It is also cheap, you can pick it up at walmart for around 10.00 I have just about every workout dvd. It's good to mix it up. I also do Cindy Whitmarsh abs and arms. Lots of choices out there for at home workouts

If you want to do a bit of strength training at home I would highly suggest getting weights, even kettlebells to use when the babe is asleep. It's worth the purchase :)

If you want combo with cardio then you would want to find routines or dvd's that can give you both. However you will likely need weights for that anyways (all the Jillian Michaels DVD's that I have so far use weights in the routines).

If you want purely cardio go to pinterest (not even kidding) and view their fitness section and make a pin board of all the stuff that doesn't require weights that you think you can do, that you can fit into your day.

HAHAHAHA I don't know where to begin! Weights are always a GREAT idea no matter where you exercise. My entire weight loss journey has been from home and I've had great results. For at home workouts, DVDs are pretty great. Its like having an at home personal trainer. I'd recommend anything Jillian Micheals. As someone mentioned above 30ds is great for beginners. If you've never lifted a weight before in your life 3-5lb is a great start. Long story story short cardio is great but strength training is just as important. :-)
