7 pounds in one week? What?

Hey everyone! I don't post very often, though I do get a lot of very helpful info from reading all of your comments, so here I go...

I weigh in once a week, every Thursday morning... I have lost 63 pounds over the last 9 months, slow and steady.. no more than 2 pounds in any one week. Today, I step on the scale and I went from 207 last Thursday to a solid 200 today. Now, I would love to believe that number (200 has been a major goal this whole time!), but I can't even believe it enough to log it into my "weigh-in" on MFP.

As a woman, I have a week a month where I don't loose, or I gain 1 or 2 pounds, but have never seen anything like this... anyone else experienced something like this? I have not changed my eating habits at all... same ole, same ole.

Should I weigh myself tomorrow (breaking my once a week rule) or just hold off until next Thursday and see where I am? I don't want to put this number into MFP, just to look like I gained weight over the next couple of weeks.

Just looking for anyone who has been through this!

I'd just wait till next week, personally. And I probably wouldn't log it till I was sure it was a stable loss, IYSWIM.

But yes, I have had rather dramatic shifts in weight. Most of which, since I now weigh on a body analyzer, I know have more to do with water than anything.

I weigh daily (but only record new lows). Assuming your scale isn't going wacky on you I'd say record it. It's what you weigh. Maybe you're "dried out" but if that's the case you know what you weigh dried out :P It is a new low period, whether its water weight, fat, or extra clothing you removed this time.

If it were me, I'd weigh again tomorrow and see what it says. I'm assuming that you tested your scale to make sure it's still weighing correctly?

You were holding onto a lot of water probably.
  • I did and it seems to be working correctly... I think I may try again tomorrow, just to double check!

You could have gone through a "whoosh".

"The “whoosh” is when you are watching your weight day in and out and there is little to small changes even with big deficits. One day, out of nowhere, the scale will drop dramatically lower than it had been registering. This is known as a whoosh.

The “whoosh” could be any number of factors and no one knows for sure. One idea, and the one that makes the most sense, is that as fat cells empty, they refill with water. After a certain point and time, under unknown conditions, these cells alleviate the water and the “whoosh” is born. The exact trigger that brings about this is unknown. Some hypothesize that it is much like water and carb loading. The body had loaded that area with stored fat, the fat leaves but the body isn’t sure yet that these areas don’t need to stay big and open for storage. So to protect itself it fills with water and doesn’t extract until it is sure that all systems are a go."

I would wait until you log it (or try again tomorrow), but I have lost 5 pounds in a week after a lot of steady pound a week weight loss. Twice. I tend to go in big spurts.

Then again, I stepped on the scale 3 times a few days ago because it showed I had dropped 2 pounds that day. I was thrilled. But it was back in the morning.

    Good luck!

And congratulation in any case. You're doing great.
  • It's possible to have something causing you to weigh in more than you should (water weight, food in stomach, digesta, etc.) but it's pretty much impossible to have something cause you to report a weight lower than what you are (assuming your scale is not broken, etc.).
So I would vote that your last weeks weigh-in was either too high (due to the reasons listed above), your scale is broken, or by golly, you just lost that much
  • Thanks for all the feedback everyone, it is really appreciated! I weighed in this morning and was at 206, a 1 pound weight loss since last week. This seems a lot more realistic, so it's the one I will document.

Learned a lot as always... thanks!
