How long are your legs? How big are your steps?
  • 10,000 steps is, on avergae, about 5 miles.
In an average day, at my desk job and through daily living, I only walk between 3-4k.

I'm 5'7" with fairly long legs... when I walk outside, steps are fairly wide I suppose... have no treadmill so far...

I can get about 6000 steps in about an hour at 3.5 speed on the treadmill

For me, 2000 steps average one mile - I'm 5'8 and take reasonably wide steps

This is a good estimate for you to use.

I average about 2000 steps per mile as well. It varies depending on my stride for a particular workout.

Approx. 5 miles. Myself, it averages about 20 minutes=1mile. (I have a small stride=shorter legs)

As others have said, it depends on your stride. If you measure the distance you cover in 10 steps and divide it by 10, you will have your stride length. With that you can use the following:

    38 inch stride - 6.00 miles
    36 inch stride - 5.68miles
    34 inch stride - 5.37miles
    32 inch stride - 5.05 miles
    30 inch stride - 4.74 miles
    28 inch stride - 4.42 miles
    26 inch stride - 4.10 miles
    24 inch stride - 3.79 miles
    22 inch stride - 3.47 miles
    20 inch stride - 3.16 miles

Also, increasing your activity level, even if it doesn't get your HR up (necessary for cardio health) burns additional calories and helps your calories in - calories out ratio.
