Best diet for tubby desk jobbers/lazy folk like me

Hey guys, I'm 19 years old, 5ft 8 and I weigh about 103kg. So I'm classed as "obese" in terms of BMI. I desperately want to lose weight as I feel its restricting my abilities to do things (I'm out of breath a lot) and has a negative effect on my self esteem. I have ADHD and have been fat since I was about 8 so find it very hard to stick to things and to change, I thought maybe a super low calorie diet would help me so I'm down to about 800 calories a day at the mo (Which is making me hugely tired and really grouchy, not to mention making my clinical depression worse) but I just read that this is unsustainable and you'll probably put the weight back on after
Anyway my question is what is the best diet for me? I worked out the amount of calories I should be eating (with one of those on-line calculators) and it came to 1,600 a day. I struggle with exercise as I feel very tired all the time and because my brother often comes in and laughs at me if I try to do anything in plain view.
Due to the nature of things in my house and my brother being a jerk I spend most of my time in my bedroom and in front of my computer (I'm an IT Student with a passion for video games and creative writing). I'm too scared/embarrassed to go to gyms/go running in public because I hate the way I look (Have contemplated suicide many many times over it) and because my tendency to get bullied by random strangers or people at my college makes me anxious about people seeing me in the real world.
So please internet, how can I lose weight?

If you set any calculator you used to sedentary, then use that calorie number for your goal. If you want to exercise you can always walk. People walk all the time so you shouldn't stand out doing it. You'll be surprised how much better you'll feel if you start moving!0
-
You dont need to exercise to lose weight. You can lose just fine with a calorie deficit (so eatkng the number this website gave you).
Dont let what others say or do hurt you... use it as your motivation. If your brother is an issue will your parents step in to help change what he is doing? Can you exercise when he is not around? Go for a walk outside... join a gym (people at the gym are too concerned with what they are doing to notice what others are doing).
Dont let people get in your way. Dont starve yourself to lose weight either. You will do more harm than good. You will lose muscle, lower your metabolism, have more loose skin and have a higher chance of putting the weight back on if you continue to eat 800 calories. Eat you target... you dont have to exercise to lose weight but it definately helps. Go for a walk, use the swings at a park, walk in place while you watch tv.0 -
If you love video games then get one that gets you moving. Depending upon what type of system you have try a Biggest loser or a Zumaba or EA Active... Then you can do them in your room. You can do it. We believe in you!0

Eat 1400-1600 every day of whole, good-for-you foods. Get a Wii Fit, if you want to.
Food can be medication for you. Look at them that way. Take all your (food) meds: Whole grains, green vegetables, lean meats, fatty fish, beans, and a 2 mile walk every day... these are better than depression meds, in my opinion.0 -
Diet - healthy foods within your calorie limit: check out "clean eating"
Video games: please develop a MMORPG that uses the motion technology! Why isn't there a game that makes me march in place to make my character move? If I can swing my sword in Wii Resort, why can't I do it in role play? In order to duck, I should have to squat down, instead of using the right combo. It would even give more variety to crafting, since I could move the remote back and forth for carpentry, swing it up and down for smithing, stir it in circles for cooking...
In the meantime, there are lots of movement games available, they just aren't as immersive. My gamer partner has been known to spend hours trying to improve his score in boxing, though.
There are plenty of exercises that can be done in just a few square feet. You can start tonight: stand up while playing your video games, maybe even march in place. Do you it in a chair or on the bed? Sitting on the edge of the bed will make you use more muscles to stabilize yourself. A balance ball also makes an active desk chair.
Use your creative writing - start keeping a journal of your efforts and your feelings. Try to capture the feelings of the bullies or your brother - what could they possibly be going through to make them think their behavior is OK? As a hint, it has more to do with them than with you.0 -
I want to encourage a few things:
1. Eat a reasonable amount. Sounds like you've worked out a 1600 calorie goal. That's good!
2. Don't feel like you have to make radical changes. Just stick to your calorie goal. Foods like lean protein, whole grains, fruits and veggies will give you more bang for your calorie buck (you can eat more of them for less calories) but that doesn't mean you can't have pizza or ice cream.
3. Talk to someone about your depression. I really hope that you are getting help/seeing a counselor. It will definitely help you in achieving your weight loss goals and other areas of your life.
4. Don't feel like you have to exercise. You can lose weight without it. However, I would encourage you to move some - exercise can help with depression too.
5. Talk to your parents about your brother. Tell them what you hope to achieve and how his attitude is hindering you. Your family should be supportive.0 -

First off, definitely up your calories to a recommended range. You're tired and grumpy, you can't exercise because you're exhausted... I think it makes logical sense that that's because you're not properly fueling your body
And the second thing is to add some activity into your days. It doesn't have to be anything extreme to start - long walks are great, some people love video games like the Wii Fit, etc. I would say the absolute best recommendation would be to do something that has a social element. Generally, people trying to accomplish the same goals are supportive (and seriously, like 1% of the people in the world pay attention to how you look exercising, and those people are jerks). Classes can be a lot of fun - I did some Zumba and really enjoyed it, though those little old ladies who could execute all the moves flawlessly while I can't even catch my breath were insufferable :P
I'm a 5'6" woman, 25 years old, working in IT. I know where you're coming from. Honestly, now that I'm working full time at a desk job, I spend much less of my free time in front of a computer. Find a couple of small changes that can work for you, and gradually go from there. You won't lose the weight in weeks (probably not in months), but you can definitely get there. Take care of yourself!0 -
Walking is great for helping to combat depression. Are you seeing a doctor? Do your meds need to be adjusted? Please take good care of yourself. You can do this.0
-
800 calories no way works for big guys. 1200ish may work for small women with 5-20 kg-s to lose (and even for them, a raise is needed after 1-3 months). I assume you have been eating 3-4000+ to become 105 kg, so why don't you try 2000 at first with moderate walking.
*Moderate walking can be turned into the classic 1-min walk-2 min jog - 1 min walk - 2 min jog thing. If you raise the numbers every couple days you would soon be actually jogging.0 -

No kidding. That would be awesome (even for single play since I'm not a multi-player). Although I have a feeling I would look odd trying to throw a fireball or heal someone (kneel down on the ground with your arms outstretched?).0 -

I agree! This is a fantastic idea. :drinker:0 -
You definitely need to see someone and talk about the depression/suicide issues. I had the same thing and i've been seeing a great therapist for years. It helps SO much!
Also, I hate going and doing anything in public as well. If you can't do it anywhere except in your room with a computer, try some DVD's - walking, yoga, pilates, zumba - anything to get the heart rate up. Or, try going on YouTube and seeing if there's something on there. I found Blogilates(?) and some basic Zumba fitness moves on there. They're short, sweet and to the point. It's a great beginning.
Finally - definitely up the calories. You can't function well on 800 a day. You need fuel for your body - so 1,600 is probably a decent place to start. Then, as you begin to get active, you gain calories. Feel free to eat them or not - it's YOUR choice.
Just take care of you. We're all here for you if you have questions or need help. Just ask. Good Luck!!! You Can Do It!!!!!0 -
You can lose weight without exercise..but it will improve your cardiovascular health, so eat in the way that will be sustainable for YOU and when you've lost some weight, try a walk to get started then progress from there.0
-
Every single person who has addressed your issue (not the gaming sidetrack..) has said EAT MORE. Your description is classic starvation. Eat those 1600 cals please. I go out for a walk at lunch time - it takes 40 mins, I'm hot when I get back, i burn 200+ cals which I get to EAT - yay more dinner! I feel better for doing this - mentally as well as physically. You can too. Make yourself the priority and ignore that brother of yours. Take care and keep coming here for that wonderful MFP support x0

with no exercise a good diet is tim ferriss slow carb diet.
It limits what you eat except for one day a week and you will not be grumpy nor hungry0 -
You've gotten some good advice here. I'd recommend trying a gym. Almost everyone in your situation has feared the gym at some level and everyone who has gone realized their fears were baseless. First, tour a couple gyms and you'll see people of all sizes going in. You won't be the only overweight person there. Second, 99% of the people there are too focused on what they are doing to notice you. There is a chance that you might encounter a rude comment or snicker, but it's slim and the best way to counter it is to ignore it and keep working out.
Good luck!0 -
Lots of good advice here-the only thing I will add is get rid of "diet" and start with small steps toward a lifestyle change. Start choosing healthy foods and find a comfortable place where you feel comfortable with working out and remember you are making these lifestyle changes for YOU first, don't let anyone stop you.0

A lot of casting looks like swinging your arm around in a big circle over your head - that seems like good exercise! Maybe for healing you have to hold still for a certain amount of time, if you move too soon, you interrupt it.0 -
In all honesty, most people in the gym don't care about what you look like or how "fat" you are, they are busy doing their own thing.
I'm 5'11'' and 260lbs and I go to the gym, despite also being considered obese.
Your story sounds similar to mine, I would spend countless hours a day in front of a computer (at work and at home) and eating crazy amounts of junk food, my weight loss journey started when I hit the beach one day with a friend, and I noticed just how fat I really was, and now here I am!
I used to be self-conscious about working
out in public, but now I don't really care. It truly does feel great to hit the gym every day, you should atleast give it a try.
Most gyms offer a trial pass so you can try before you buy, just print it out and go for the 3 days or whatever it may be and trust me, you'll want to keep going back.
As far as your diet goes, I do about 1790 calories a day, but I'm also a guy, so I would assume yours would be around the 1,300-1,600 range.
SWEAT IS FAT CRYING, JUST DO IT, ETC ETC0 -
it is IMPOSSIBLE for a OBESE person to go into STARVATION MODE>.. stop with the regurgutation of BAD INFORMATION.... 800 calories is enough...She needs to get up & moving and is tired because she doesnt do any stregnth exercises... when she loses a BUNCH of weight, she can then ADD in calories... right now there is enough stores on her body to sustain herself at 800 calories
Yes, please STOP with the regurgitation if bad information. Even an obese person should only be on an extremely low cal diet with proper medical supervision, as it is extremely hard to get proper nutrition!!
If you go an extreme calorie deficit with no exercise, you will gradually get weaker and may feel more and more sluggish or even more and more depressed.0 -

Well, first of all... you're brother is a douchenozzle for laughing at you. Secondly, since you're in your room most of the time, search youtube for some beginner exercises. Watch the videos and do them in your room, where no one can see you. After a while, I'm sure you'll gain the confidence to go out and walk/jog outside.
Diet wise... um, eat like 1200 calories of healthy food: lean meats, whole grains, yogurts, stay away from sweets.0 -
First of all, DO NOT DIET! Change your lifestyle. Simply determine what you have to lose and slowly change how and what you eat to be healthier, but don't think of this as a diet... I find it best to eat six smaller meals per day and watch all of the food that I eat to maximize nutrition. If tomorrow I know that I will be having pizza, then I make sure to eat lower calories at all of my other meals and lighter today and the day after tomorrow. There is no food you have to say you will never eat. You have to take ownership though of the calories that you consume and seek to get your body lean and fit by tracking and adjusting your eating.0

Thanks everyone! I was really surprised by the positive responses and ideas I've got, on the idea of a motion-based RPG I do actually do something like that already, it's called Live action roleplay or LARP for short, I know it's not really the same as a video game but if any of you guys are interested in stuff like that I find it really fun. Some of my motivation for losing weight is so that I can fit into a full set of hard leather armour or get myself a breastplate to wear.
I've had 1,300 calories today and I'm feeling pretty good It's nice to be able to eat 3 meals a day again I must say. I've been pretty much not eating this entire week and it's really sucked.
Again, Many thanks to everyone who has replied so far. I really appreciate it and it's cheered me up massively0 -
full set of hard leather armour or get myself a breastplate to wear.
THERE'S your motivation right there. Anytime you think someone on the street or gym or your brother is laughing/staring at you, just think how awesome you're going to look in your LARPing armour. I see LARPers climbing in trees and stuff on campus. If you can, get outside with your LARP group, make it more active. Take swordplay lessons. ANYTHING! We what you're doing for yourself!0 -

Ignore the person who said its fine to eat at 800 without medical supervision and without regard to the other negative effects of eating at such low calories and listen the ^^this advice.0 -
If you want sound advice, listen to what LoraF83 suggested to you. We probably seem like old people to you , but how I wish someone had given me this advice when I was in my 20s. I wouldn't be here today - I'd be out living my life. Being on a very low calorie diet is how I ended up here. You are young. Do this the HEALTHY way one time and you will NEVER have to diet again. Best of luck to you!0
-
blah blah blah
800 CALORIES
blah blah blah
Said no interesting person ever.
If you eat like that:
You're going to be weak, period. Weakness sucks.
You won't be able to do much. You have friends that like going out for lunch at work or hit a pub afterwards? No can do, you ate a f***ing celery stick for breakfast and don't have the space for anything but lite water. Maybe food's not your thing (sucks to be you), maybe you're friends with those outdoorsy types that enjoy hiking or skiing or whatever. Think they're going to want to worry about you passing out from a blood sugar crash, or just overall not being able to do any of the fun bits? Not so much.
But hey, you'll have worked hard for that body...and by worked hard I mean done nothing and felt miserable all the time. Might as well enjoy it, and by enjoy it I mean sit down and watch TV or something else completely worthless while munching on ice cubes since you're over your calories just reading this.0 -
You have told the OP that 800 calories is enough. Sure, it may be if they don't mind losing muscle but if they actually want to be health, have lasting weight loss and not hurt their body 800 calories is not enough. I don't see why anyone would think that's okay. I personally would prefer to lose slowly and eat properly so I keep my muscle, lessen the chance of loose skin and allow the weight loss to last.
oy vey....you truly skipped over the fact that I ALSO said she needed strength exercises... among other things... get off your soapbox now pls0
