Kettlebells??

There doesn't seem to be ANY reference to KettleBells in the database. I just finished doing Iron Core Kettlebells Volume 1 and I am sweating...it is tough!! Of course, i am completely out of shape. I estimate with the resting periods I did at least a 30 minute workout (I took off 24 minutes for rest and intro) and I can feel it! I am just wondering how this isn't already in the database? I had to put it under cardio for my tracking.

They are probably under strength training... Which doesn't calculate any calories burned.

It is a shame there's nothing there in mfp. This is interesting reading : http://www.acefitness.org/getfit/studies/kettlebells012010.pdf
And here http://www.m.webmd.com/fitness-exercise/news/20100212/kettlebell-workouts-burn-calaories-fast?page=2 where it says

The results showed that the average participant burned about 20 calories per minute during the kettlebell workout, which equates to 400 calories during a typical 20-minute kettlebell workout.

Researchers say that's equivalent to running a six-minute mile or cross-country skiing uphill at a fast pace. They credit the rapid calorie burn to the interval training format of kettlebell workouts.

    Hope that helps?

I just did my first kettlebell class this morning. I had read the above blurb when I was trying to calculate calories burned, but 900 seems a little excessive for my 45 minute class, based on my perceived level of exertion. I listed it as "circuit training" since that seemed the most similar.
  • Yeah 450 was a guess. An online calculator estimated much higher but it seemed to high. Kettlebells are awesome and I think its something I can stick with. And I got a four DVD set so plenty of room to grow. I am sure I will be on vol 1 for a while though.

I think its a hard thing to accurately measure unless you have a hrm as obviously different weights makes it harder and I use different weights for certain exercises too. The DVDs I use are art of strength providence and also their Newport DVD, I sometimes use Keith webers extreme kettlebell workout and that's such a tough cardio workout.

I am fairly fit cardio-wise though two stone overweight and 52 years old.Using 12 and 16K kettlebells.

My 30 minute kettlebell session, interspersed with calisthenic movements like side jumps, burpees, mountain climbers, burns around 600 calories.

    Hope that helps.

    Here's the session I do: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_7FnkMTL80o

I love iron core! Was it DVD 1 or 2?

I have worn my heart rate monitor for it and tend to burn about 400; sometimes as high as 500 if I really push it (but I do a slightly longer warm up and then some dynamic stretching at the end.

Edit - sorry, just seen it was volume 1. When you get board try volume 2 - OH MY GOD!!! Google deck squats with kettlebell for a taster!
