I have a daily calorie total goal of 1200. My sugar goal was auto defaulted to 24g. Today I had a protein bar (15g), 1 cup watermellon (10g) and a yogurt (4g) so am already over my sugar goal and it is only lunch time.
Please advise.

Quantity, nutrient timing, and over all glycemic load are variables that are always changing but the correct answer is that it's too much sugar once you cross that threshold of being able to absorb and utilize it all for energy! The moment it's absorbed to quickly and spills over into fat it's become too much.
Listen to your body, pay attention, and keep refining til you get the desired affect for your own body that's the only way to get it right there is no book in the world that can tell you exatly what's right for your body.... Just good information on how to find out for yourself0
