I thought my choices were ok, but....

a normal day eating for me consists mainly of huge portions, tons of fat and carbs and little to no fruits or vegetables. I am a meat and potatoes kind of girl. So this morning I was consciously trying to make some healthier choices, even though i slept in and had to grab something on the run... so this is what we have so far. please be gentle.

Breakfast: 1 egg salad sandwich (it was either this or a danish) on wheat, 1/2 can ginger ale, 1 large oatmeal raisin cookie
Lunch: Pork Teriaki stirfry with white rice and lots of mushrooms

so.... i know it's not healthy... but considering what i USUALLY eat, it's actually kinda scary. I logged what I have had so far, and i only have 292 calories left for the day. I'm eating SUBSTANTIALLY less than normal, and it makes me wonder how many calories i usually eat. it makes me fear that i was in the 4000-5000 calorie range on most days. isn't that gross?

so anyhow... I am so tired, have heartburn, and due ton the fact that i consumed vegetables today, also have diarrhea. yay!

so tonight I'm going to try to have something not too many calories, but it's going to be tough to stay in my day's range...

it also makes me wonder how many calories i have eaten in order to be 190 pounds over weight... 3500 x 190= 665,000 calories. That's 1371 big macs...or 391 large pepperoni and mushroom pizzas or 2215 cups of ice cream. each of those thigns i have eaten have taken their toll. makes me sad and a little pissed off.

Well... can't be down about it, just try to make better choices tomorrow. I guess i should be happy with anything under 5000 calories, but i want to be as close as i can to my daily goal.

One day at a time. It's hard make the adjustment from the old new to the new you. You'll figure it out over time. This site really helps too! Since you have less than 300 calories left for the day (if you really want to try and stay in your calorie range), I might suggest you have some fish and steamed veggies for dinner?

It doens't matter what you did yesterday....focus on today!

when you first make the change - it can be a very tough and trying process - especially when you are used to eating 5-6k calories a day! stay focused and keep making the right choices as much as possible. your stomach will shrink and you will feel satisfied eating less than you were used to, but just the right amount for your body :)

something that's kept me going is finding healthy alternatives to the foods I love! Or, eating smaller portions and then supplementing with other healthy foods. The one thing I also try to do is limit or eliminate any "liquid calories" - drinks with a lot of calories but little nutritional value. I'll drink skim milk, low sodium V8 and occasionally some juice (or a freshly made smoothie) and that's it. the rest is water or fresh brewed iced tea with splenda.

and get used to the gas/diarrhea - that's the fiber talkin!

good luck to you on your journey! :)

If you made better choices than you would have a week ago. thats something to be proud of! Just as with most things there is a learning curve with trying to improve your health and lifestyle.

Keep at it and soon enough you will get into the habit of checking the nutritional info on food before you even buy it. then its only a short step away from knowing approximately what the nutrition will be like before you have even checked the packaging, just from knowing what ingredients are in it!

Just remember, even a small step in the right direction is a step further away from where you want to be! keep making those baby steps and you will be at the finish line before you know it!

I used to consume in the 4-5000 calorie range. I had no clue that my eating was that out of control. Just stick with it and the changes will happen. They won't happen overnight. Just start small and before you know it you will be craving the healthy foods. Good luck!!

    What's your daily calorie goal?
I've read that many people have an easier time of it if they wean themselves off the calories in a more gradual manner, rather than jumping straight from 5000 per day to 1200 per day. Try keeping your calorie count closer to 2000 for a few weeks to let your mind adjust, then pare down to 1200 or whatever your goal is. You won't feel so deprived, which is a major roadblock for lots of people.

That being said, you really should try to get up 10 minutes early to make yourself breakfast. It starts the day off on a good note, and helps to keep your appetite at bay.
I always make a 3 egg white omelet with .5 oz feta cheese and some basil. It takes 3 minutes, is 65 calories, and very satisfying!

Like BeautifulScars said, take it one day at a time. Choose to be healthy TODAY. Yesterday can't be changed, and tomorrow isn't here yet.

    LindsayLee-

I was in the same boat as you are!! In fact I am scared to even count what I was eating, because I would probably want to throw up! I like you was an on the run eater and not too long ago made the changes I have made. I would sometimes eat three meals a day on the run (fast food) and I would consume numerous amounts of unhealthy snacks/sugar in between. I have been calorie counting for almost a month now and trying to limit eating out and eating late (after 7pm). My doctor told me to stay between 1600 to 1900 calories a day and thats what I am doing. I have noticed it has gotten easier very quick for me (thank God!) I am not totally depriving myself of everything I once ate, just making sure I count and log everything I eat on here. I am by no means perfect trust me I have gone over my calories since starting but it's the small steps that count!

But I believe in my case that what someone mentioned earlier that your stomach will shrink, just give it time, I already think that mine has shrunk even though it hasn't even been a month!

Hang in there girl! We are all here for you!!

A big part of this process for you will be PLAN PLAN PLAN. You are going to have to start planning ahead. Every Saturday I sit down and go over my meal plan for the next week and make my grocery list. Sunday I go shopping and pre-make any meals that I need to take to work with me. I cook my chicken and whole wheat noodles and make sure I have enough for the week. At work, I have my measuring cups and extra tupperware to warm up my lunch. That way I am not tempted to go out to lunch. I already have lunch ready. You can even divide your food up for each day, but just make sure you make enough so you don't have to cook every nite. My opinion, it saves time that way.

You can do this and that is why you are here. We are all here to help you. Someone earlier said, one day at a time. Even go as far to say, one meal at a time.

I wish you the best of luck in your journey to a happier and healthier lifestyle.

It will take some getting used to! From my experience, it is harder when I blow it at breakfast. When I run out the door and grab a danish, that's 300 calories right off the top & it's not even that filling! It seems like one thing leads to another and if I have a bad breakfast, my whole day is unhealthy. I know, I know, people tell you "forget breakfast, make good choices at lunch" but it never seems to happen for me because chances are, if my day started out in such a rush that all I got was a danish, I'm probably way too busy to stop and have a healthy lunch, snack, dinner.

That being said, I really try to wake up ten minutes earlier and make myself a good breakfast in the morning. I feel full longer, so I eat a smaller, healthier lunch. I also get to sit down and enjoy my yogurt and turkey sausage, or eggs, or whole wheat toast, whatever...instead of starting my day in a chaotic rush.

It will get better! Anytime I feel like having an unhealthy snack, I get on MFP and it gets my mind off the snack and motivates me to keep making healthy choices! Good luck LindsayLee!

If you think your fiber gas is bad, just wait until you have gotten your healthy eating down (which you will!) and you indulge in some fast food: your farts will be crazy! and you'll wonder how in the world you put that in your body on a regular basis :):)

seriously though, you are talking about stuff. You are acknowledging that you made bad choices. It's when you are ignoring what you eat that there is a problem.

Also, try doing some sit ups, lunges, jumping jacks and/or pushups before bed. Even if it's just a few to start, you can add that to your diary and give yourself some extra calories.
