weight isnt everything!

for years and years for me its been all about the number on the scale and tbh sometimes i still feel like a litle kid who gets a toy when the numbers go down. well i started this life style change in june 2011 and i lost 18lbs in my first 9months, i did it slow and steady. im 5ft8 and started at 181 pounds.

well since march 2012-NOW i havent gained or lost anything apart from the same 1 pound however my body has changed dramatecaly.

i have lost 22 inches from around my body by running and eating right 90% of time.

i look completely diffrent im no longer a size 16 i am now a size 12 and run 4-5 times a week because i love it. i use to hate it lol

so my message for all of you is if your at that point where you are distressed about the numbers on the scale try taking out a tape measure and taking the numbers on there. you will be shocked...... its taken me about 10 months to figure this out and a fellow mfp stuey has been telling me for ages lol

So you weight the same, but are 22" smaller?? Omg that's incredible and so what I need to hear. I've been so fixated with the number on the scales - I'm trying to focus now more on body fat % and measurements - this week I lost 0.5lb, but also 4" :-)

    Great post.

I am trying to adjust my thinking in this way at the moment...

I look like I am a healthy size but my BMI/weight is not in the "healthy" - it irks me but I know its not the be all and end all.

That is really reassuring! I'm way into the overweight category and need to lose weight, its got to come off, its hurting my joints - only around 30lb I reckon, but even 14lb would get me within healthy and make it much easier for me to run - my poor legs complain greatly about the weight I'm expecting them to carry. But I'm guessing if I build muscle (starting weight lifting alongside my running) then I could possibly stay this size but be smaller?

@amanda-- Look at my profile pic. I am very close in weight in both of them! The one on the left I was between 188-199lbs ( not sure exactly) wearing a 42DD bra and 16/18 pants. In the one on the right I am wearing the SAME shirt, but a 38C bra and 12/14 shorts weighing 196lbs.

When I first started it was all about the numbers, but now I go by dress sizing - weighed myself for the first time in months this weekend and have been able to maintain but the size dress is smaller

That's so true - people can get hung up on numbers on the scale - I have done it too - but now I make sure I take measurements regularly and can see the inches coming off - it's very rewarding.

This has been my problem most of my life. My weight is high, and at this point I am definitely overweight, but I'm always going to be in the high numbers on the scale. I keep track using the measurements and I'm so much happier to see inches come off than lbs :) It's really nice to hear that other people have had the same struggle with this issue that I have. Thank you for posting.

I have lost 8 pounds but I have also lost 11" inches. My clothes feel baggy even though 8 pounds shouldn't make a difference. I know its the inches lost that counts.
