Drinking Water

Hi guys,

I just wanted to ask general consensus over this matter. We are advised on this site to try and drink 8 cups of water a day, or approximately 2 litres. I normally can drink that no problem, but I tend to drink at least another litre of water whilst I'm working out. Should I include that in my total water intake or is that essentially "dead" water as I'm replacing what I'm working off?

Probably a stupid question, but I figured if I didn't ask, I wouldn't know :)

Cheers all

I don't even log my water, I know I drink a ton. I think you should do whatever is easiest for you. I see no need to track it unless you have to to remind yourself, or if you're just scientific and like to see the numbers. :)

I add it. It probably doesn't really matter. While 8 cups of water is the general standard the better way to determine good hydration is actually the color of your urine. Clear = good; yellow = bad (if you've taken a multivitamin with excess Vit C then your urine may look yellow due to the excess Vit C; just FYI).

I try to log water, but I keep losing track.
  • @Rose313: I'm a tiny bit nerdy like that actually lol! I'm starting from scratch and trying to change a completely terrible diet where I was eating junk and drinking fizzy drinks like a fish. So the tracking of everything at the moment is more just to get me into good habits :)

@ACSL3: Thanks. I knew the urine was an indicator but wasn't actually sure what stood for what :) although I do take vit C tabs so need to keep that in mind and not freak out haha :)
  • I've got a litre bottle I drink from and then re-fill as a way to keep it straight in my head :)

I fill up my big Bertha once a day check it as done on my little counter thing then move on.
  • I don't log mine. My Mens Journal magazine probably two issues back had an article about water. Basically, they said that nutritionist and scientists are starting to re-think their water recommendation. People have been led to believe that they need to guzzle multiple bottles of water a day. This article said that many scientists say that simply isn't true or necessary and that the health benefits of drinking multiple bottles a day vs just drinking when you're thirsty is virtually nil.

It said that there is plenty of water in our food and other drinks that people really only need to drink water when they are thirsty. Our body's thirst mechanism is smart enough to tell us how much water we actually need. Again, this was a Men's Journal article. I'm not spreading this as truth, just giving what I read. Everyone should make up their own minds and do their own research of course.

I couldn't find the exact article again... could have been my Popular Science mag too. But here is the same research.

  • I try to drink the recommended 64 ounces of water a day. If I work out and drink a little extra then it is no problem. I heard somewhere that you are suppose to drink half you body weight in ounces. So if you way 140 pounds, you would drink 70 ounces of water. I don't know if that measurement is completely 100% accurate but I have noticed that making sure I drink plenty of water has really improved my skin.
