Help...my hair is falling out and wont grow

I am getting worried it may be something serious. I take vitamins (Hair Skin & Nails specifically) and Omega 3. I read this was suppose to help. It has not. My hair has not grown an inch in at least the past 6 months (thats not normal as it use to grow unusually fast) and now I lose tons of hair every day.

Any ideas?

    What is your typical daily caloric intake? Your body, hair included, needs more than just supplements to be healthy. Also, your skin/hair/nails are dead cells. When something goes wrong, that can be an indication of an internal problem such as an allergy or deficiency in nutrition. I had the same problem when I was struggling with an eating disorder, even though I was taking a lot of supplements at that time.

    If you are eating healthy (staying above 1200 cals), taking supplements and have no known allergies, I would try coconut oil. I have been using organic coconut shampoo and conditioner with no chemicals which has made my har sooo much healthier in the past couple of months. It really does make a difference. People also suggest rose water, which I have yet to try. Don't dye your hair, stop putting it up and don't straighten or blow dry it for a while.. see if that helps.

    If none of those suggestions work, please see a doctor. This can be an indication of liver problems or other organ failure. Your skin/hair and nails can tell you a lot about your health.. Hope it gets better!

    Is this a recent thing or has your hair been like it before?
    Do you colour your hair?
  • Hair loss can also be indicative of thyroid problems. If I was having that problem I would want to consult a doctor. Good luck!

  • It sounds like you are not eating properly and are malnourished, not getting the vitamins and minerals you need. I used to starve myself and my hair was a mess. Take care of your body, you can still diet and eat well and keep your weight down. Your only get one shot at life, be good to yourself. You should see a doctor.

    You could be possibly anaemic.... get your blood tested.

    Definitely see a doctor. It could be something as simple as an underactive thyroid or anaemia, both of which can be treated with tablets. My hair falls out when my thyroid meds are too low and it breaks really easily too. It could also be malnutrition but it's not worth taking the risk of seeing what happens by changing your diet. If your hair is that bad you need to see a doctor so they can do blood tests to determine the problem. I hope you get it sorted out soon. It must be worrying :flowerforyou:

    What is the brand of coconut shampoo/conditioner that you use?
    To OP: I also use MaxiHair (hair,skin,nails vitamin), I use a sulfate-free shampoo and an organic coconut shampoo, and lately I've been using virgin coconut oil as a hair mask. For me, I know I need to incorporate more [healthy] fats into my diet because they are essential for hormone production/regulation and hair/skin/nail health. What is your protein and fat intake like?

    Reasons your hair could be falling out:

    You are not getting enough calories and/or the right macro nutrients in your diet. See a doctor.

    You have thyroid issues. See a doctor.

    You have organ failure. See a doctor.

    You recently had a child (within the past few months). It is normal to have a lot of hair loss in the post partum period and it can be kind of scary to see all of that hair fall out, but it is normal. No need to see a doctor unless you start to see balding patches, in which case, the problem is not post partum hair loss.

    There are hair follicle diseases that can cause hair loss. You will need to see a doctor for this too.

    Best of luck. Unless you just had a baby, don't try to self medicate and resolve this. Go see a doctor.

    Any recent hormonal changes such as starting or stopping birth control pills or a recent pregnancy/birth? That can cause temporary hair loss.

    My hair fell out when I lost the biggest part of my weight over six months. I started taking biotin three months in daily and using Nioxin shampoo and conditioner and scalp treatment. It has helped immensely. My hair is growing in thicker than it ever was before.

    As others have said go see your Dr. I have the same problem and asked my Endocronologist. He said it's not my thyroid at this point as it's under control, but the weight loss. I'm hoping it'll stop this year when I get to goal, but if not then I'll push the issue. Make sure you don't let your Dr. push this off as weight loss. Demand blood tests to rule out any of the conditions that may be causing it!

    I lost a large area of hair in 2009 through alopecia, which was stress induced. It's where your body's own immune response attacks itself.

  • I agree, my husband has problems with loosing his hair and they have to adjust his thyroid medication.
  • I would see a doctor about that - you never know what could be causing that. It could be anything from a minor scalp infection to something more serious.

    Take a look at the foods you are eating. Hair growth & replenishment relies heavily on protiens and fats (healthy fats, of course). Try to increase these two macronutrients and decrease your carbs a little bit. Eat things like fish, avocado, chicken, eggs, etc to stay on track with healthy eating & to help stimulate hair growth & health.

    As far as supplements go, I've been taking Biotin for about a month now and my hair has already grown almost a full inch! Its insane - my hair naturally grows pretty fast but this stuff puts it into overdrive (and I love it). Its also great for the actual HEALTH of your hair. I've also been told that when you combine Biotin with Folic Acid or Fish Oil supplements one tends to see even BETTER results, but I have yet to try this. Prenatals are great for hair growth too.

    [I should probably also add that I eat a high protien diet, which only works even better with the efforts of the Biotin.]

    I've had this problem before. Not only did I have an unattractive thyroid but I was extremely malnourished. Your diet is set to private so i'm not sure how many calories you are consuming. But like others have said its your thyroid, malnutrition, or possible something else health related. Go see a dr.

    Have you gotten your thyroid checked? Hair loss is a good sign of a thyroid problem.

    Try 3000-5000mg of Biotin, and don't use a cheap shampoo/conditioner.

    I was having the same issue, it looked like I was going bald (male pattern baldness) and I went and saw my doctor she put me on a low dose of Synthroid, started taking 3000mg of Biotin, and switched to a better shampoo/conditioner and my hair is now full and no longer looking bald.

    Hi there. I wanted to offer up a little info based upon my similar experience. First of all I noticed that you are 38 years old. I am 45 but around my late 30s I had the same thing happen. I eat super healthy, was taking all the necessary vitamins, eating extra protein, etc. and yet still tons of hair - handfuls - coming out every day when I would shampoo and blow dry. Super scary to say the least. I can say that part of it probably has to do with your age and a change in hormone levels that is normal as women enter the perimenopause time.

    Now, I would first say most definitely go to your doctor and get everything checked out to make sure you don't have some underlying healthy issue. But, try to keep calm for sure because stress can actually make the shedding worse.

    Another thing to know, and this I learned at least about my situation very recently, is that some vitamins and supplements in high doses can actually cause hair to shed more. I happen to be extremely sensitive to even slight changes in diet -food and supplements. And recently I quit taking multivitamins altogether. The reason I stopped is that I suspected I was overdoing the Vitamin A, which in high doses can cause hair to shed - at least according to the research I did on the Internet. I also read that fish oils (Omega 3, etc.) can contain Vitamin A as well and then when you add that on top of a vitamin that contains Vitamin A before long you're overdoing it.

    So I had extreme shedding for several years and in the last 6 months or so I completely quit taking any multivitamins and my hair has never looked and felt better. In fact the areas where it was shedding have started regrowing.

    Now, please understand I am not suggesting that you stop taking multivitamins or start doing anything I did. But this was my experience. Everyone's body is different and hormones can play a huge role. But I did want to at least share my experience.

    My Mom lost her hair in Huge Clumps due to stress.... ended up having to get injections! DEFINATELY... go see your doctor!!! :flowerforyou:

    Also, while clearly this isn't the CAUSE of your hair loss, fresh aloe vera on the scalp is supposed to have impressive hair-growth properties.

    Thank you all for the great advice. I did have bloodwork done recently and everything looked good. However, I had not mentioned this problem so I am not sure dr was looking for it. I appreciate the ideas on shampoo/conditioner and vitamins. I had not thought that overdoing vitamins could be as bad as overdoing fat and carbs. I do need to increase protein as this has been the advice of most posters. My stress level is high but I am working on that, plus a change in diet and exercise so hopefully that will help too. Thanks again for all the responses. Much appreciated.

    Also, no I am not doing the HCG diet. I was a few months ago but for a very short period of time. A 500 calorie a day diet plus pills didnt seem like such a good idea after a few days so I stopped.

    And no, Im not pregnant.

    Will definitely try the coconut oil/shampoo/conditioner.

    If it doesnt improve I will go to dr. Ive been avoiding that due to no money or insurance but cant be too careful with my health right.

    I used to have the longest thickest hair and mine started falling out. My doctor has diagnosed me with PCOS (poly cycst ovary syndrome.) Might be worth checking into the symptoms...

    One more thing to keep in mind, clearly, based upon all the different comments in all of these posts there are SO many things that can cause hair shedding and hair loss. And sometimes it's impossible to determine what the cause is. It's such an individual thing based upon your body, hormones, biology, diet, etc.

    I just wanted to point that out for some perspective. I remember when my hair first began shedding and I was freaking out and thinking that everything I read was what was wrong with me and what was causing my hair problem.
