I have lost 10 kilos in 3 months (yay!)

My weight loss has not been linear.. one week I might lose 1 kilo and then next 100grams but it has continued to keep plodding along.

I started taking the contraceptive pill 2 weeks ago and since then my weightloss has stopped.

I have been eating my calories and exercising and last week added strength training but still no loss.

Could this be because of the pill?

There are a number of different types of contraceptive pill and people react differently to them. I can't remember which one I was on, but a few years ago I put on 7-14lb from it! I'm on the implant now and doing fine.

Talk to your Doctor and they'll know best. Here in the UK it can be difficult to convince them to switch your pill because some cost the NHS a lot more to prescribe. I assume you're in the USA so can get any of them you wish?

Edit: you're using metric so I'm guessing you're either in continental Europe or Aus/Nz?
  • I'm in Australia... I'm thinking about just stopping it.

I've survived 23 years without and and I don't want anything getting in the way of my weightloss!

I had the same experience on the pill - it also made me more hormonal then off it. I tried a different brand and had the same problem with that too (I remember one being called Yasmin?) To be honest, I found the pill basically made me feel like I was pregnant all the time, so I had cravings, ate more, was more bloated, and super hormonal so I had to stop taking it in the end. Although I really really miss having such short periods.

In the first instance I would ask your GP to change brands and try a new one - if you have the same problem I'd think about giving up the pill all together.
  • I read the horrors of contraceptive devices and pills and just decided it wasn't going to work for me. Not even just the weight loss problems, a lot of other things! Go with your gut I'd say. I use good ole fashion condoms and they have worked. I'm not ignorant to the fact that they may fail me some day.. but it's what works for me. I feel weird posting this haha

I was going to ask about this. I have been on the pill, continuously, for 18 years (I am 33), does anyone know how much if it effects weight. I am certain that I am fully responsible for being over weight, I was just wondering if any long time users went off the pill and noticed a change?

I had the same problem with mine, I think had I not been working out to counterbalance it I would have gained weight, so I was basically working out to keep the weight gain from the pill off and it got frustrating after a few months so I stopped taking it. I

The pill causes your hormones to change... hormones changing can cause you to hold onto water. It can also make you feel hungrier due to hormones as well... therefore causing you to eat more. It will not cause you to gain fat.

I have been on various pills for years and haven't gained or lost any weight that wasn't my own doing. When I went off the pill I would notice no out of the ordinary change in weight.. going back on was the same.

I was taking BC strictly for my skin's sake, and I stopped because it was causing weight gain. Plus I just kicked the whole pharmaceuticals thing for personal reasons. If you don't need it, why fill your body with the chemicals right?
  • I've been on the pill for 6 years and I've lost 19kgs or 44lb in the past 18 months. Also, I've read some sources that debunk the link between the pill and weight gain, just a couple I just pulled up are...

    Just some food for thought...
