So I will be starting hot yoga tonight! I have never done any kind of yoga before. Has anyone done it before and how do you track it? I've been told that it burns more calories that regular, obviously, but how much more, normally? And what should I expect for never having done it before!! Thanks!

I love the hot yoga. I am not sure how to track it. Bring a towel and I took two bottles of water with me. After the class I feel so refreshed and engerized. It totally flushes everything out of your body. If you can focus you mind in the class it will be the best experience. ENJOY !!!!!0

The idea that hot yoga burns more calories than room temperature yoga (assuming the same routine was done) is a misconception. If you walk outside on a hot day versus on a cool day: you will be more tired and feel like you worked harder on the hot day but the calorie burn difference is minimal.0

I love hot yoga! I do three, sometimes four, times a week. I just log it as regular yoga.
In terms of what to expect, I agree that you should take lots of water and at least one towel with you. The first time I did it, I got a bit lightheaded - if that happens, take child's pose or savasana (corpse pose) until it passes. Also, you might want to let the instructor know it's your first time and see whether she or he has any suggestions for you. Enjoy!0 -
I practiced bikram hot yoga for about 2.5 years. Loved it. I wasn't tracking then, though.0

Hot yoga usually does burn more than traditional yoga because most hot yoga classes incorporate a flow style which is more active, however it does not burn more calories than flow yoga done in a regular yoga studio.
I record all of my yoga classes hot, regular, flow or meditation as general yoga and figure it all levels out since the estimates on here are often argued to be overshot for other exercises. Normally I would recommend using a HRM to determine how much you actually burn during a class but trust me, you don't want to wear anything more than you have to in a hot yoga class. I recommend wearing either shorts or capris (my preference is leggings that are just below the knee) and a tank top. Also wash cloths are great to have so that you can hold them while you do poses that require holding onto your feet or leg and can put them between your foot and your leg in a tree pose so that you aren't as slippery. I always have a hand towel for sweat, a wash cloth for grip, and a large towel (I just recently purchased an actual microfiber yoga mat but a beach towel works great!) to cover my yoga mat so that it doesn't feel as slippery when I get super sweaty and nasty. Also if you need to take a break do it, I'm by no means a world class yogi but I made the mistake of trying to tough it out in my first class and thought I was going to pass out by the time we returned to the floor. In my studios the temperature is 5-10 degrees cooler on the floor so by taking a childs pose and getting a drink of water you can recover much quicker than if you keep standing up.0 -
Hot yoga does not necessarily burn more calories than regular. But the style of yoga does. Hatha is more about breathing/holding poses, but power or flow will burn more calories because the level of activity has increased. Drink lots of water and have fun!0
