After A week of hard exercise.. You crash!

I started doing around 4000 calories in the gym using the HRM...

but after a week of that. I just took a few days off.. but during that time. I just crashed. I was sleeping at least 12 hours out of the day. Is that normal for anyone else?

but after a few days I am better and ready to go back to the gym

Yep. First couple of weeks I needed 2 rest days. Then 3. Now I'm down to 1.

totally normal, your body needs a chance to recover and shore up its energy stores. I burn an average of 700 cals a week (double that on long run days) and there are days when I'm in bed by 8, I just accept it as a natural consequence of activity levels!

Ummm thats what I was thinking...
  • I am always like that! Not only do I need and want to rest but I am also hungry when I work out extra hard. Does anyone know why? I have the extra calories but I don't always want to lose them but sometimes I am just starving after tough workouts.

You should definitely have 1-2 full rest days (I generally have 1 these days)...your body and muscles need recovery time. Recovery time is pretty much just as important as the actual workout if you truly want to reap all of the benefits. I would also suggest mixing up more intense and less intense workout sessions throughout the week to aid in recovery.

Sounds like too much exercise and not enough food. You shouldnt be crashing that much after a week.
  • I do a little over 1000 calories per activity. Elliptical and Treadmil. I do each for 2 hours.. sometimes I'll go higher on one and lower on the other. Just depends on how much body is killing me that day.

As long as I keep the heart rate up... and move. Then I am burning calories.

Before that I will do 30 min of weight lifting and then half way through the 4 hours I will do 30-40 min of weight lifting to give my feet a break.

I am using the F4 Heart Rate Monitor... and that is what it says based on my stats.. 256lbs at 5'9"

If you're following the MFP method, you're supposed to eat those exercise calories back. There's already a substantial caloric deficit built into you calorie goal using the MFP method...you are supposed to net to your goal...net of exercise. So, if my net caloric goal is 1,800 (includes a 500 calorie per day deficit) calories and I burn 400 during my workout, I need to actually eat 2,200 calories to net to 1,800. Not doing so results in too large a deficit...too large a deficit will ultimately be detrimental in achieving your weight loss goals. In my example, not doing so would net me 1,400 calories which is substantially below my BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate)...the rate at which your bodies burns calories in a coma just to make your organs function properly.

    How much are you eating?

Actually, I just looked at your diary. On the days that you were burning that much you were burring 5500-600 calories in a day and eating a max of 2500 calories. To support that kinda of workout you need to be eating 4000 calories at a minimum. And some days you were eating 1500. No wonder you're crashing your body is exhausted.

What you're trying to do is like trying to drive cross country on a quarter tank of gas. You either need to fill up or only drive across town.

Working out more doesnt necessarily mean its better. weight loss is 80% diet anyways.
  • Around 2,000 give or take.... According to MFP, I should be eating 1650cal with the 1000cal def. 2 lbs a week. I eat some of the exercise calories back.

I eat the 1650 and then the 350 is what i take in for the protein drink for the day.

As cwolfman13 already pointed out, mfp didn't tell you to eat 1650, it told you to net 1650. So if you're burning a bazillion calories at the gym, you need to eat those bazillion calories BEYOND the 1650. Your "calories remaining" should be 0. No wonder you're crashing like that.

Burning out after a week is a bad thing. I burn between 750 and 1000 calories a day, seven days a week with an average calorie consumption of between 2100 and 2400 per day. I am losing 1.5 lbs per week on average for the last 32 weeks. The few times I have pushed too much, generally too much resistance training, I have hit a wall and start to feel worn down and beat up. The goal of exercise is that it should be energizing and invigorating. If you are hitting a wall after a week, you are trying to do too much too soon and will end up getting sick and/or losing motivation. Look out for your long term health and fitness first or your body will rebel and you will end up missing everything. Even elite athletes need a period of 6 to 8 weeks to come back from an off-season and get back to be able to burn 4,000 calories a day with training and only when they are eating back probably 3,500+ calories a day.
