Running Shoes Tips?

I have never run any distance in my life and am just now starting to feel the "need" to just run (a la Forrest Gump). I need some running shoes! I don't want specific brands/styles but ideas on what I should look for when shopping for them. Any thoughts on how to really "test" them before I buy them, only to find out they really don't fit me right? Any help would be awesome! Thanks!

Go to a running store (not a chain like foot locker) and get fitted. A good store will analyze your gait, let you run around in them a bit before buying, and let you return them if they don't work. Don't pay attention to brands or look, just how they feel. If you're working up to longer distances, get your shoes a half or full sizer bigger than your normal street shoes. Expect to pay around 100 for a good pair.0

Hi, find a running shop which carries out gait analysis - its very important that your shoes support you properly and you ideally need to know what level of support you need. Most shops will then encourage you to run on the treadmill in your shoes to find out which pairs fit you best and which you feel most comfortable in - we all have our faves - mine are Saucony Progrid Guide 6s :-) If you go specialist you will be given a lot of guidance and shoes are so important when running! (and if you want you can then go online and possibly find them cheaper once you know exactly what you need - but I don't tend to do that!)0

Thank you to you and the poster below! I will try to find a running store in my town, but am not sure I have ever heard of one. I'm sure I can find one in Indy! THANKS!0

If you do want to go out of town, there's a place called Blue Nile in Carmel, on Greyhound Pass.0
