Food stuck in throat

Options
Does anyone else ever have this problem?

For supper tonight we had hot dogs for a treat, and after my first hot dog, I started having a feeling that a piece of food was going down very slowly and getting stuck. I started getting an acidy, burning sensation in the chest/throat area, and actually got sick several times. This went on for about half an hour. I had to keep spitting because I couldnt swallow as it was go down slowly and cause more pain. This has happened with other foods before, just hot dogs seems the worst.Sorry for the grossness.
This has happened to me many times before, and it has always been the worst with hot dogs. I Had a really bad episode of this a couple years ago with hot dogs, so I made sure to eat super slow and chew well.
Does anyone have any idea what this could be? I read alot about narrow esophagus, and GERD. I am going to go see my doctor, but just looking for some advice.

Thanks in advance!!

I have had this happen with both food and medicine. I do not know what it is, and haven't pursued it. If you find out, let me know!

my advice would be go to the doctor: an ear/nose/throat specialist, and/or a gastroenterologist. look around to find someone good, and get that checked out pronto.

That totally sounds like acid reflux. Avoid bread and other grains like the plague, and that issue will literally go away. Be careful with the MDs, they will simply call it acid reflux and prescribe you an over-the-counter post-proton inhibitor called Prilosec and the like. Avoid.

Wheat and bread are very detrimental to one's esophagus and cause these issues. I would avoid them and then see what happens. It wouldn't hurt to get a check for Barret's Esophagus. You are probably fine, but it is good to cancel out any possible issue. Acid reflux does cause Barret's.

Definitely avoid the bread and grains.

    GL to you!

My husband has always maintained the wieners are ground up lips & *kitten* so they kind of make me gag too.

    GERD
Take Prilosec until you can get into see your doctor.
I'm an RN and I've had an esophageal ulcer from medicine which has similar symptoms.

Beleive it or not, it coould be an allergic reaction to something that was in the hot dog. I get that same feelin when I eat bananas. i get a closed up throat and find it difficult to breath. i also get this when I eat my mothers chili. I have no idea what her ingrediants are but the same thing. A closed throat, a shortening of breath and a mouth that will not quit producing saliva. If today was the first time his has happened to you, consider it an issue with the hot dogs. if it does not happen again for a while, revisit the dogs again in a few weeks and see what happens. It coould be a simple solution.

Sounds like dysphagia - quite uncomfortable to be sure!! Obviously, it's best to speak with your doctor, but ask him about having a swallow study done. The procedure would likely be performed by a Speech-Language Pathologist - and they'd be able to see exactly what's happening. Dysphagia is something that can be treated (depending on the cause) - treatments can include surgery, but could also be as simple as modifying the textures in your diet! Definitely worth checking out! Good luck!

Only a Doctor in the correct field of study can help you. Till then, I would assume it would be wise to stop eating Hot dogs.

Make an appointment with a gastroenterologist (stomach specialist). It could be many things -- esophagitis (irritation and inflammation of your esophagus), esophageal strictures (narrowing of the esophagus), GERD.... get a diagnosis.

It could be nothing. It could be something serious.

My sister had something like this and it sounds similar. It was with all foods. She had trouble swallowing. She was only 27 or so when they operated and took out whatever the problem was. GERD is more like a daily dragging down from acid coming up your throat even when you haven't had a meal in hours. Good luck with the doctor.

I've had that happen before. The anxiety of knowing something is there can actually make it worse too. I've swallowed pills and like an hour later it feels like it's coming back up. I became extremely paranoid about it because it felt so weird. The more I worried about it the worse it seemed to get. I then googled the symptoms and read that the anxiety of it can enhance the feeling. I'm not sure how true it is but it did seem the more I worried the worse it got.

I have silent reflux, and that's exactly what happens to me. It's not too much acid, but my LES valve thingy sticks open sometimes, and anything I eat or drink comes up to my throat, leading to laryngitis, and sometimes infection. With this new diet, I have not had any more problems with it. I also have to be careful not to bend at the waist right after I eat.

Yeah, definitely sounds like acid reflux, I was on prilosec for just a short while and it was horrible. The side effects last for ages. I'm sure it is okay to take in the very short term but it is hard to get off. Just something to think about if the doc offers it to you.

I've had this happen several times, and it is definitely not acid reflux. I had a swallow study done (mmm, swallowing barium yogurt while having an xray), but they couldn't find any abnormalities in my throat. It hadn't happened in forever, and then it happened last week. I had so much saliva and mucus build up I couldn't breathe. It was terrifying, and I didn't know what to do. It eventually cleared itself, and the only thing I can think to do is take smaller bites and chew better. One thing I did notice, is it tends to happen more when I don't drink frequently during my meal. Now, I'm sure to have some water in between every few bites.

I have had this happen many times and went to the dr about it...i saw a gastoenterology doc and found out I have acid reflex and a hiatal hernia...had to have my esophogus stretched and I am on prevacid for life. When I don't take my prevacid the problem happens all over again.

do you feel any bulges in your throat when you swallow? - my mother's side of the family has goiters - and i personally suffered from an enlarged thyroid that i had to have removed - that would also cause this hard to choke down your food problem.

could also be acid reflux episode too

but best bet is the dr like you mentioned :)

Agree with everyone who said to get it checked out by a specialist.

Also wanted to add that I have a friend who had a similar issue. His problem was not GERD, but rather narrowing of the esophagus. He had a surgery for it; he had a relatively easy recovery but had to do a liquid diet for a short time while his throat was healing, and now he's fine and can eat anything, no problems.

I hope everything works out well for you.
