Doing before and after picture collages: Software?

A lot of people splice together two or more images for before-and-after (or during!) picture comparisons. What software does everyone use to do that? I'd like to start making some. I have a Mac, but would be curious for any platform.

I use Photoshop because it's what I have as a former web designer, even if it's a horribly outdated version. If I recall, "Gimp" is a freeware version of Photoshop, and I think you can create a collage in Photobucket.

I use an app called "PicWall"
It is really easy to use, you can set your own backgrounds then select the photo s you want to have on screen and move and resize them to anything you want.
You can also add text to it if you want xxx
