Is this really necessary?

I'm sure a line like this is great for the athlete or heavy lifter....
But for someone who is just trying to right now drop some body fat and inches, before trying to build muscle.... is this needed?
Is a post work-out shake even needed? I really like my protein shake, mainly because I just don't eat enough protein so it's a way to get some in.

Try a few pre-workouts (most companies offer single serving free samples), and see if you like the way they make you feel. If you do and can afford them, use them. If not, don't. Nothing other than food is really necessary anyway. This applies to the post-workout shake idea too.0

I only have a protein shake/bar after a particularly long or taxing workout, or if I've lifted heavy weights. Otherwise I wouldn't recommend it. (Or, I confess, occasionally as a meal replacement!)0

I do like having a protein bar or shake on occasion to meet my macro goals (and in the case of the bars, satisfy my sweet tooth), but for the most part, I meet my goals with just normal food eaten at regular meal and snack times.0

Agree with the others. It really depends on what someone is doing. I often do a protein drink because I find it really hard to get in enough protein via food. Just not my favorite food group.
When I did a 200 mile bike trip in 2 days, and when I was in the final, heaviest training for it, I needed things like Nuun and Gu to help get me through it because I just couldn't eat heavy enough to fuel myself when riding that many hours a day. And I can't train with a lot of food on my stomach. But training rides have to get into the 50-60 mile-plus range before I need that type of stuff.
Anyway, no, I don't think someone who is just doing a bit of workout for fitness needs any of this.0
