Milk Problems

I'm struggling with the whole issue of drinking milk. Back in 2010, I completely eliminated dairy milk from my diet (though, not dairy milk products like cheese and yogurt). Since then, I have not been able to tolerate cow's milk on the rare occasions I've had it.
I drank soy milk for a while, but to be perfectly honest, the stuff I've heard about soy is a little scary. I'm not eliminating soy from my diet completely. I can't give up my occasional (once every few months- or maybe twice a day on vacation) decaf vanilla soy lattes (made with vanilla soy milk), and I still love edamame, but I don't want to have soy milk on a regular basis- like with my breakfast cereal or to wash down a sunbutter and jelly sandwich (I can't have peanut butter at work).
At the same time, coconut milk and almond milk are ALRIGHT, but they don't have much protein. I really miss drinking milk (I grew up on skim, but I'm open to 1% as well since that's what I'd have to drink if I snagged some at work). However, I'm a little nervous about adding it back in. Any advice?

I don't have a problem with dairy in general. I love cheese and yogurt and ice cream. It's just drinking milk in general. I'm also not a big fan of rice milk. There's not much there nutritionally. It's a lot of carbs and very little protein.0 -

You haven't really told us why you eliminated milk in the first place. Of course eliminating anything completely for a long time (like milk or meat) can be a little unsettling when you add it back into your diet.
So you want to add it back? What are you worried about? The calories? How to manage introducing it into your diet? Sure would like to help but not sure how.0 -
I just started to drink more soy milk, and I fell in love with the Starbucks soy frappucinos. It's not that I disliked cow's milk, drinking vanilla soy milk just seemed like more of a treat. Gradually, I stopped drinking cow's milk entirely.
I'm not worried about the calories at all. I'm more worried about reintroducing it without getting sick to my stomach because it's been so long since I've had a glass of milk. I had about two tablespoons of milk recently, but that's hardly anything.0 -
I would say that if you have no contraindications to the milk than it is just a matter of introducing the food to your body again. Do some research on what to expect when your re-introducing a food. It might take a while but I'm sure you'll be able to do it over time. Of course, do the smart thing and drink skim milk if you can tolerate it. It is fat free and it has all the calcium you need. It does have some sugar as well. Good luck, I hope you get to enjoy it eventually.0

I think if you haven't completely eliminated milk and dairy from your diet, it will be fine to add it back in. The cheese and yoghurt you are still eating, will have the same dairy protein in it that the milk does, so while you've haven't had milk, your body is not un-used to the protein, which is what would cause you problems (most likely).0

For now, I'm trying to build awareness of my diet, but even when I start focusing on numbers, I'm going to primarily focus on fat, fiber, carbs, and protein. I'm not worried so much about sugar.
I guess I'll start with drinking 1/4 to 1/2 cup at a time to see how I tolerate it before I try a full cup of milk.0 -
I'm a vegetarian, and for a while vegan, so I switched over to dairy-free milks (I've tried them all, but prefer vanilla soy or almond milk). A few months ago I decided to switch back to cow's milk to save a little money, since that's what my boyfriend drinks, and it really didn't settle well with me. For some reason I can tolerate yogurt, cheese and dairy desserts (though they do upset my stomach a bit, it's not enough to get me to stop eating them completely) but can't stomach milk. I'm not sure why, but the taste bothers me and it always gives me gas and upsets my stomach. I've since switched back to dairy-free milk and I can't see myself drinking cow's milk again.
So Delicious recently came out with an almond milk that has added protein. You can find it at Whole Foods: http://sodeliciousdairyfree.com/products/almond-plus-almond-milk-beverages/original-almond-plus-almond-milk-beverage
I'm honestly not too worried about soy intake, so drinking soy milk doesn't bother me. I just do my best to get non-GMO soy products.0 -
I too am thinking about adding whole milk back to my diet. I eliminated all coca cola and 99% of the beer from my diet and I need something more than just water all the time. I loved milk as a youth and figure I should try it again.
Plus I need to up my calories. I am eating too few for a guy my size right now (around 1400-1500 calories a day) and figure this would be a good way to add a couple hundred calories a day.0
